YEAR 3 HUMAN SKELETON SCIENCE WALT: To identify and name bones Did you know that an adult has 206 bones in their skeleton! Our bones make up our skeleton! Our skeleton supports our body and protects our organs. Without a skeleton we would just be one big blob of jelly! Each bone has it’s own special name. Bones are made of living tissue. About half of a bone is just water!
Sing a skeleton song! Here is a fun song to get you naming those bones! https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Ns 91 jtu. PHZI
X-rays! Have you ever seen an X-ray before? X-rays are like light rays, that can pass through many solid materials like your muscles and skin. However, some of the x-ray’s energy is blocked by bone, which is why you can see bones in an xray! Let’s play ‘Name that bone’!
Name that bone!
Name that bone! Neck bone (these bones support the head and neck and allow nodding and shaking movements)
Name that bone!
Name that bone! Knee bone (the knee cap is called the Patella meaning ‘small plate’!)
Name that bone!
Name that bone! Foot bone (there are 26 bones in your foot to be exact!)
Name that bone!
Name that bone! Back bone (also called the Spine, it has 33 bones and more than 120 muscles!)
Name that bone!
Name that bone! Finger bones (there are 27 bones in your hand plus two more forming your wrist joint!)
Name that bone!
Name that bone! Hip bone (It may look like one bone, but the hip bone is made up of 3 bones called the ilium, pubis and ischium!)
Name that bone!
Name that bone! Shin bone (There are two bones in the shin area: the tibula and fibula/calf bone!)
Label a skeleton! TASK 1: Over to you! Name your skeleton! You can use the internet or books to research bones you are unsure about. There is a word bank at the bottom of the worksheet to help you! Why did the little skeletons do extra work? Because they wanted to get bone-us points!
Make your own skeleton friend! TASK 2: Once you’ve labelled the bones in a skeleton, see if you can create your own moving skeleton! Can you label the bones too?
