Year 2 Science: Materials Key Vocabulary object- a thing that you can see or touch material- what an object is made of metal- a material that is often shiny and can be bent plastic- a material that can be bent and shaped wood- a material that comes from trees Sticky Knowledge § Buildings can be made from brick, wood and stone because they are strong and tough materials. § Most of the paper or cardboard we use came from trees § Glass is often used to make windows and bottles because its transparent § Plastics are used to make many of the things we use in everyday life. They are used for toys, bicycle helmets, mobile phones and window frames. § Materials that can easily be stretched- fabric and rubber § Materials that can easily be bent- some metal, some plastic and some wood. transparent- you can see through it squashing- pushing together bending- changing the shape or direction of an object Stretching- pulling to make an object longer twisting- turning part of an object clockwise and the other part anticlockwise Outcomes q Know why some materials are more suitable than others for specific uses q Know why glass, wood, plastic, brick or paper would be used for certain jobs q Know that some materials can be squashed, twisted or bent according to need
Year 2 Homework Grid- Materials (4 th November- 2 nd December) Choose a material (plastic, wood, glass, metal). Find out: • What object it can be made into • How it is made into this object. • Where the object is used. Go for a walk. Make a chart and write down the objects that you can see. What material have they been made from? Metal glass wood plastic brick Choose a material. Paper, card, plastic or wood Use this material to make a special box to keep treasures in. Which material could you use to keep your treasures the safest? Why? Collect some of your recycling. Choose an object at home that you can stretch. Design your own superhero! Make a boat that will float in water. Which material is best? Why? Which material would be worst? Why? What happens when you stretch it? Why do you need to stretch it? What would happen if it didn’t stretch? Their costume must have some metal, plastic, fabric and paper on it.
