Choosing the right text to use this week • There are 3 different texts this week that are different levels of difficulty. • The stars at the bottom of the page show you the level. • They increase from 1 star to 2 star and then 3 star. • Each text increases in difficulty for reading, vocabulary and content. • If you are finding a text too easy or hard, then try the next star level up or down. • Remember to answer the questions from the star level text you choose. What do these words mean? rowed (verb) when you are moving a boat with the ores shipwrecked (verb) when a ship has crashed and is damaged lighthouse (noun) a building, built on a cliff or rocks with a light at the top to warm ships that there is danger there so they should not sail too close. lighthouse keeper (noun) the person who is in charge of running the lighthouse and keeping the light on to keep ships safe. marriage proposal (verb) when someone asks you to marry them. alerted (verb) told, but in a hurry as it is urgent

What do these words mean? • born to (verb) means: her parents were • resided (verb) lived • better conditions – they wanted someone nicer to live with a bigger house for example or more space. • inhabited (verb) lived • consisted (verb) had • spiral staircase (noun) a set of stairs that goes up in a circular shape • violent (adjective) rough • ineffective (adjective) does not work ( –in + effective = not effective) • commended (verb) said well done • heroine (noun) a female hero • exposed (adjective) there is little around a place to protect it from the weather and, in this example, rough seas. • cenotaph (noun) a large monument that is meant to represent a tomb where someone is buried, but they are not buried there. • monument (noun) a statue to remember someone or something.

Challenge You could write the words twice onto cards and play a memory game by turning them all over or playing snap with someone else in your house. You could write the words down and put them around your room and do a word hunt with them. Leave them up so you can practice them everyday.

Use the text you have chosen and practice reading it. Watch the video of the text being read if you need help. Challenge: Text Marking This means when you underline or highlight the important information when you are reading. Important information might be things like: • Names of places • Names of people • Dates Remember to read fluently, you may need to re-read the text several times! This makes you a more fluent reader and helps you to understand what you are reading.

Find it finger! Get you find it finger ready to find the information or words in the text!
Find the follow facts and words: • What did Grace’s father do for a job? • What was the name of the group of Islands that she lived on? • What year did she risk her life to save the shipwrecked sailors? • How many people did they rescue? • What were the seas like on that night? • What did Grace get given for her bravery?
