This week we are going to try and refresh our memories on multiplication So hang on tight, engage brains and here we go……… Let’s start by thinking about those organised patterns that help us visualise multiplication calculations. Do you remember what they are called? That’s correct……… ARRAYS

Multiplication Using Arrays An array is an arrangement of a set of numbers or objects in rows and columns. It helps you understand calculations by displaying them visually. It can be really useful when multiplying two numbers. Arrays can be seen in everyday objects like egg boxes and bars of chocolate. Columns Rows

Multiplication Using Arrays Here is an array showing 6 x 4 This shows 6 rows with 4 counters in each row The 6 is listed first because this tells us how many groups there are. The 4 tells how many are in each group. 1 2 3 4 5 6 6 x 4 = 24 4

Multiplication Using Arrays Multiplying is the same as repeated addition. This array shows 3 x 5 but we could also write this down as 5 + 5 An array does not need to use counters or dots. It can be displayed using different items - the answer will be the same.

Monday Task Can you find some small objects eg buttons, raisins, smarties, cheerios You are going to practise making arrays today. Perhaps you could take a photo? Can you make arrays for these multiplication calculations? 3 x 2 5 x 2 4 x 5 3 x 10 5 x 3 Smartie Array! 4 x 2=8
