Character description- discussion time LO To choose effective adjectives What is character description? What words help us describe? Can you think of any examples? What could we describe about a character?
What is a character description? A character description describes a character from a story, telling us more information and detail about them. We use adjectives to describe something, these add more detail. Sometimes we might use 2 adjectives to describe the noun e. g. long, matted beard. When we use 2 adjectives this is called an expanded noun phrase. Today you are going to write your own character description of The Twits!
First we need to find out about The Twits… The Twits are 2 characters that always to play tricks on each other! Mr and Mrs Twit live together but don’t always get along because they are too busy thinking of new practical jokes for one another.
First we need to find out about The Twits… Mr Twit is one half of a horrible couple called The Twits. He and his wife spend most of their time playing nasty tricks on each other, except for the times when they're playing them on the children or animals that cross their path like the poor Muggle-Wump Monkeys. The other thing you should know about Mr Twit is that he has a horrible, hairy, bristly, dirty, smelly beard that he never washes. Ever. His beard is full of all sorts of disgusting leftovers from meals like cornflakes, tinned sardines and stilton cheese. Because of all this, Mr Twit never really went hungry. By sticking out his tongue and curling it sideways to explore the hairy jungle around his mouth, he was always able to find something tasty here and there to nibble on.
First we need to find out about The Twits… Mrs Twit is horrible as well as ugly, and she is married to the equally nasty Mr Twit. The two of them spend all their time playing mean tricks on each other, and on the other unlucky people and creatures that they meet. Mrs Twit has a glass eye (that she adds to Mr Twit's water-glass so he knows she's got her eye on him) and a walking stick (that Mr Twit uses to convince her she's got the Dreaded Shrinks. )
Next we need to plan our description. We need to think about their appearance and their personality. Appearance Mr Twit Mrs Twit Personality Baggy, purple jacket Long, matted beard with bits of food stuck in it Small, beady eyes Mean, cunning man Short, wooden walking stick Long, bristly eyebrows Rotten, yellow teeth Sneaky, mischievous lady
Now lets recap our conjunctions and think of some sentence starters… Conjunction reminder… Remember we use conjunctions to join two parts of a sentence together. Sentence starters… Instead of starting each sentence in the same way, can you think of any more sentence starters? The characters are and but or If you look closely Inside his beard you might find Above her eyes His ____, _____ nose
Now we need use our plan to write some sentences to write our character description… WAGOLL The Twits are a couple that always play mean, cunning tricks on each other because they are mischievous characters. Mr Twit has small, beady eyes but he can still keep a watchful eye on Mrs Twit and her sneaky tricks! His long, matted beard is full of left over food and if you go close enough you might even be able to smell the rotten, smelly food.
Once you finish… When you have written your character description you can send a picture of it to your teacher through your school email, on each website, so we can read them and share some on our Twitter.
