YEAR 2 ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION Session 1 Adding

YEAR 2– ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION Session 1 – Adding 2 digit numbers without exchanging.

In Year 2, we use visual maths to add solve two digit + two digit questions. Before we start. . Let’s remind ourselves…. A two digit number has tens and ones. 46 4 tens 6 ones 40 6

Let’s start by adding a two digit number and a one digit number using visual maths. 42 + 7 = 49 Tens Ones To start, we draw the first number in our sum. 42 has 4 tens and 2 ones. Then we draw the second number in our sum. 7 does not have any tens. It has 7 ones. Now, we count up. We must start with our ones. Then the tens. 4 9 We’ve got 4 tens and 9 ones. 4 tens = 40 + 9 = 49.

Your turn…. Answer this sum and then check with my steps afterwards. 31 + 4 = 35 Tens Ones To start, we draw the first number in our sum. 31 has 3 tens and 1 one. Then we draw the second number in our sum. 4 does not have any tens. It has 4 ones. Now, we count up. We must start with our ones. Then the tens. 3 5 We’ve got 3 tens and 5 ones. 3 tens = 30 + 5 = 35.

Now let’s tackle adding 2 two digit numbers. 55 + 23 = 78 Tens Ones To start, we draw the first number in our sum. 55 has 5 tens and 5 ones. Then we draw the second number in our sum. 23 has 2 tens and 3 ones. Now, we count up. We must start with our ones. Then the tens. We’ve got 7 tens and 8 ones. 7 tens = 70 + 8 = 78. 7 8

Your turn… Answer this sum and then check with my steps afterwards. 33 + 22 = 55 Tens Ones To start, we draw the first number in our sum. 33 has 3 tens and 3 ones. Then we draw the second number in our sum. 22 has 2 tens and 2 ones. Now, we count up. We must start with our ones. Then the tens. We’ve got 5 tens and 5 ones. 5 tens = 50 + 5 = 55. 5 5

Let’s practise these skills on our activity sheet.
