YEAR 10 READING SKILLS: INFERRING WITH VISUALS
REMEMBER… Inferring involves interpreting ideas by filling in gaps in information from one’s own knowledge. What you see + what you know=what you infer
QUICKWRITE: WHAT DO YOU INFER?
A SAMPLE INFERENCE TABLE: Compare your inferences to the table. Was there anything you missed out on? What could you do next time to form more comprehensive inferences? Write this down.
VISUAL INFERENCES When working with visuals, we can use the following table to help us form inferences: Questions to ask What do I see? What does it What is the remind me of? artist’s purpose? So what? What do I observe? Remember to look at: Another image? A personal experience? Another text? Why does it matter? What is the significance? -The background and foreground -The subject of the image (the main thing being shown) -Facial expressions or actions -Use of colour and lighting -Any contrasts -Any words within or around the image To analyse? Explain? Record? Entertain? Persuade? Inform?
VISUAL INFERENCES Get into groups of 4. You will have four minutes to fill out the table from the previous slide, responding to each of the 4 images
