Year 10 Basic Electronics

Electricity - What is it? u Electronics is all about controlling electricity through wires, devices and components u Electricity flows around a Circuit

Dangers of electricity u Never put wet hands or equipment near an electrical switch u Never overload sockets

Safety u Never put metal objects near electricity

Safety u Look out for over head power lines

Task u In your books create a poster warning people against the dangers of electricity u Include rules and sketches

Components u The components that we use in our car are the u LED’s u LDR u Battery u Switch u Resistors

LED’s u Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are very rugged, they last a very long time and they are an optical source u LEDs produce red, green, yellow, or orange light. They are used in a range of products

LDR u LDR’s or Light Dependent Resistors are very useful especially in light/dark sensor circuits. u The animation below shows that when the torch is turned on, the resistance of the LDR falls, allowing current to pass through it.

Battery u Batteries come in all shapes and sizes. They store electrical charge and as we all know when they are put into an electronic device such as a portable radio, they provide the power.

Switch u Basically switches bring contacts together in different ways but they do the same switching job.

Resistors u Resistors determine the flow of current in an electrical circuit. Where there is high resistance in a circuit the flow of current is small,

Preset Resistor u Preset resistors are used in circuits when it is necessary to alter the resistance. Dark/light and temperature sensors usually have these components as the preset resistor allows the circuit to be made more or less sensitive
