Transition from Reception to Year 1 - First ½ term • To prepare children for the learning style of KS 1. • Mainly focussed practical activities, with an emphasis on developing mathematical, writing, reading and social skills. • Encouraging independent working and more sustained periods of concentration.
Year 1 -Learning Behaviour • Encouraging independence and formal working. • Sitting at a desk. • Following a set of instructions.
Homework The Year 1 children are set Maths, English and Spelling homework on Wednesday. In addition to this they may be set a Topic project or Religion work. ALL homework is to be returned to their teacher on the following Monday. Also, we ask that you sign your child’s reading record every day to show that they have read. Children who can show they have read 4 nights a week until the last week of half term will be rewarded. We do expect the correct amount of time to be spent on homework and for it to be high quality.
How can parents help? • The best help is interest taken in learning and progress. • Supporting homework. • Good communication between the school and home. • Getting a good sleep on a school night!
How can I help with writing? • Again, reading a variety of texts – the more children read, the more familiar they become with different text types. • Reading homework – comprehension • Writing homework –sentence structure • Spelling – spelling lists / rules every week
How can I help with reading? • Ensure your child reads every night! • Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction. • Try to listen to your child read and talk to them about what they are reading. • Help them with the different skills of reading especially ‘skim’ reading where they are looking for key words in the text. • Speed reading for fluency • Reading homework
How can I help with Maths? • Support with homework – not just helping with the Maths but reading the question can really help by highlighting the key information. • Be patient-children require quality thinking time! • TIMES TABLES!!! (2, 5 and 10) • Help your child to check their work through – this will help them to spot mistakes that can sometimes be easily fixed.
