Year 1 Reading th Week beginning 13 July
Year 1 Reading th Week beginning 13 July 2020 This week we are reading Mr. Men Sports Day to follow on from all of the sporting activities that you have been enjoying recently. Mr. Men Sports Day has a few surprises though…
Have you ever been to Nonsenseland? In Nonsenseland, the grass is blue and the trees are red. And all the cars have square wheels. Why? Easy! So they don’t roll away when they are parked in a hill. I know, what nonsense!
And in Nonsenseland they hold a sports day every summer. Nothing silly about that I hear you say. Well, you’ll just have to wait and see. This year, the preparations for sports day started two weeks before the event and, it being Nonsenseland, things happened somewhat differently to how you would have expected. Little Miss Scatterbrain got the sports field ready.
Mr Dizzy marked out the track for the races.
And Mr Nonsense got the finishing line ready. A very silly-looking finishing line!
Task 1 (part 1): Answer these questions before you read on… 1. Who prepares the sports field for sports day? 2. On the next page, we will meet Mr Rush. Which event do you think Mr Rush would be good at? Why do you think this?
The day of the Nonsenseland Sports Day dawned to a great deal of excitement. All the Mr Men were there, and no one was more excited than Mr Rush who was at the sports day for the very first time. He wouldn’t wait for the last event of the day. The 100 m sprint. But for the first time in his life he did wait.
There were lots of the other events to watch first. However, as each one came and went, Mr Rush became more and more confused. The high jump had become the low jump and was won by Mr Small. And the long jump was the short jump. Won by Little Miss Tiny.
Throwing the hammer became throwing the jelly. Won by Mr Strong, whose jelly went a bit further than he intended it to!
Little Miss Naughty was leading all the way in the sack race. But Mr Nosey won it by a nose.
For the swimming gala, Mr Silly had filled the swimming pool with custard! Mr Tickle won by a hand… on the end of his extraordinarily long arm.
And the egg and spoon race became the raw egg and teaspoon race. Much trickier… and a lot messier!
Finally, it was time for the 100 metre sprint. Mr Rush and all the other runners took their places at the starting line. The starting pistol fired, Mr Rush shot down the track and before you could say “six speedy sausages!” he had crossed the finish line. “I’ve won!” cried Mr Rush.
Everyone gathered round for the prize presentation. Mr Rush could not wait to hear the announcement. The King of Nonsenseland stood up on stage. “In third place, ” he said, “is Mr Silly for the silliest running shoes ever!”
“In second place, ” he continues, “is Little Miss Dotty for the silliest running outfit. ”
“And in first place, for by far the silliest 100 metre sprint, is Mr Slow!” “But…but Mr Slow didn’t even run! Look, he hasn’t finished yet!” cried Mr Rush, who could not believe what he’d just heard. “Exactly, ” said the King. “He walked. What could be sillier than entering a running race and then not running! And here he comes now!”
Poor Mr Rush hadn’t realised that the event was called the ‘silliest’ 100 metre sprint. “But…but that’s nonsense, ” said Mr Rush. “Exactly, ” said Mr Slow. “Complete nonsense. ” And he stepped forward to collect his cup.
A tea cup!
Task 1 (part 2): 1. Why did Little Miss Naughty not win the sack race? 2. What was the swimming pool filled with instead of water? 3. Can you name one sensible thing and one silly thing that happens in Nonsenseland?
Task 2: Choose the best word, from the 3 choices, to describe the 6 characters on the next 2 slides. . Use a dictionary or Siri/Alexa to find the meaning of each word if you are not sure. Then choose the best one for that character. Example: Mr Rush is: cautious Definitions I found in the dictionary: A bit unsure urgent patient In a rush Happy to wait for things
Mr Nonsense is: illogical sensible Little Miss Scatterbrain is: rectangular forgetful slender Mr Small is: miniscule gigantic hefty
Little Miss Tiny is: petite colossal organised Mr Tickle is: practical dull mischievous Mr Strong is: tough meek shy
Task 3: Can you design your own ‘silly sports day’ event? 1. Draw a picture of it. 2. Tell us what is silly about your event. 3. Tell us which Mr Man or Little Miss would win and why. Have a look at the example on the next page There is are lists of Mr Men and Little Misses on the last few slides to help you too.
Example: My event is the Nonsenseland Pole Vault. It is silly because the winner is the person who uses the smallest pole! I think that Little Miss Tiny will win because she is so small that she can only hold a tiny pole!
