Year 1 Home Learning Pack Week 5 SILVER Week beginning 27. 4. 2020 We hope you are enjoying the Year 1 learning packs. The timetable on the next page is one you might want to use with your family. Please organise your day in whatever way suits you. In this pack there are ideas for maths, literacy and mindfulness. We will be providing 3 different packs for each week. There will also be a project for each week. We hope you enjoyed learning all about the Queen, This week’s project is about ‘Plants and Trees’. There is also a guide on the website about how to use the Oxford Owl website Bronze-this is the easiest pack Silver- most children should be able to do this pack Gold-this is the hardest pack and has some extra challenges in There is also a phonics Power. Can you draw and label them in your homework book or on paper?

Monday: Maths - Fractions This week in Maths we are going to be learning about fractions. Do you know what these are? Tell your grown-up if you know. Our star words today are: part, whole, equal, unequal, half, divide, by 2 Today we are learning how to divide an object in to equal parts. This is called halving. two TOP TIP – it is very IMPORTANT that when we are halving an object that both parts are equal, which means the same. If both parts are unequal it is NOT in half. Look at this piece of paper: Tell your grown-up if this piece of paper is folded in half? Explain how you know. See if you have a piece of paper at home. If you have, try folding it in half. See if both parts are exactly the same. Then have a go at folding your piece of paper ‘not in half’ so both parts are unequal!

Our star words today are: part, whole, equal, unequal, half, share. divide, by 2 I have 8 carrots and I am going to share them between Anansi and Turtle. Look how I did it. . Tell your grown-up the answer to these questions… How many carrots does Anansi have? How many carrots does Turtle have? Is this fair? Have I shared the carrots out equally? Are the carrots divided into two equal groups? What have I done wrong? How could I make it equal? * Could you try this with carrots or something else? TOP TIP – Try saying one for Anansi, one for Turtle until you run out.

Wednesday: Maths - Fractions Now you understand halving we are going to move onto quartering. Quartering is the same as halving but instead of having two equal parts you have four equal parts. Our star words today are: part, whole, equal, unequal, quarter, divide, by 4 Today we are learning how to divide an object into equal parts. This is called quartering. four TOP TIP – it is very IMPORTANT that when we are diving an object into four parts, all parts need to be equal. Remember equal means the same. If all four parts are unequal it is NOT in quarters. Look at this circle. . Tell your grown-up whether this circle has been divided into quarters? Explain how you know. See if you have a piece of paper at home. If you have, try folding it in half and then half again. See if all four parts are exactly the same. Then have a go at folding your piece of paper into four unequal parts. Tell your grown-ups why that isn’t in quarters.
