Year 1 – Grouping data Lesson 4 – Making different groups Teacher resource 2 D objects ‘Grouping similar objects’ activity Pair pupils. Cut out the objects (slides 2– 3) and provide each pair with one of the objects. Ask pupils to think, pair, share: “What labels would your object have? ” Take some suggestions. Explain that you will be ‘searching’ for objects using a property. The first property will be the colour blue. Ask pupils to decide in their pair whether they think they have an object that would have a ‘blue’ label, and if so, to hold up their object. Count, or ask a pupil to count, the number of objects being held up. Add this number to the table under the property. Note: This lesson does not focus on tally charts, and integers (whole numbers) should be used to fill in the table. Repeat this activity using a different property, eg ‘its shape is triangle’ etc, and fill in the table with the number of objects. Share the completed table and explain to pupils that they have created a small data set, which is a collection of related data. ‘Making different groups’ activity Group pupils and provide each group with roughly ten 2 D objects (this ensures that they can make more than two groups if they wish). Explain that they will be investigating the different ways that the objects can be grouped. Give pupils some time to experiment with grouping the shapes based on the properties. If you have access to a tablet or camera, they could take a photo of their different groups of shapes. Scaffolding opportunity: Ask pupils to group their objects into only two groups, eg colour, ‘red’ and ‘not red’; shape, ‘circle’ and ‘not circle’, etc. Alternatively, use two different colours and two different types of shape to achieve the same outcome. Pause the activity and discuss how pupils have chosen to group the objects. Add these properties to slide 9 of the slide deck. Give pupils some strips of paper or sticky notes. Ask them to write the group labels and add them to the groups. Give pupils some more time to change how they had grouped the objects, and encourage them to apply group labels.
