Year 1 LSAs and other amazing people The LSAs are here to help and support your children’s learning in year 1 alongside their teacher. They are all amazing and are ready and willing to support in any way they can.
Our golden rules are… Be ready Be respectful Be safe The children have attended an assembly, created class charters and discussed what these rules for the school mean. As part of our celebration assembly on Thursdays, some children have also been awarded star of the week for showing that they can follow these rules. Stickers are also being handed out in classes not only for hard work but also for following the golden rules. Children also receive quality time for 10 minutes on a Friday if they have followed the rules all week.
Year 1 learning focus In writing we are having a big drive on handwriting and on practising on most days the use of cursive writing. In maths we are getting to see what the children know and have been looking at shapes, measure, numbers addition and subtraction. We have also been practising writing numbers are part of handwriting. Reading- our focus is on phonics to support the children with their reading. We have learning about the different ways that we can use to work out words we don’t know how to read.
Our traffic light system All of the children start their day on a green light and we try and create opportunities for them to stay on green. If they do all week then they receive quality time on Friday. However if they do not follow our golden rules, their name may be moved to an amber light and they lose 5 minutes of golden time. If there is any incident that means a child needs to move to a red, then we will let you know and the children will unfortunately lose all of their golden time.
Our Values Respect Aspiration Positivity Uniqueness Trust Celebrates our ethos across the school and instils core values into children as they learn and develop to be the best they can be.
Year 1 so far… The children have settled into year 1 extremely well and it is amazing and inspiring to see how they have take to the new learning environment and how hard they are already working. All of the children are at slightly different stages and we are aware of how different it has been for everyone so we have been taking it slowly and letting them settle whilst watching and deciding what we can best do to support them with their return and learning.
Things are a little different… but the children are adapting to the new routines well.
Handwriting There are lots of skills and strengths that are needed to be able to write and there are many things that children can do inside and outside of school to help. Colouring in and keeping between the lines will help, threading , tying and zipping. It also helps to have a good core strength as well as strength in the hands so exercising to help coordination and twirling the pen around in the fingers can also help.
Reading in Y 1 Reading Regular reading to and reading with the children really helps to develop their skills. We know its tricky with changing reading books only on Tuesday and Fridays but there are so many things that you can read with them at home and reading every day really does make the difference. Please be sure to sign their diary when you have heard them read as if we do not see a signature we will assume that they have not read to you and so wont change their book ( no point in changing a book they haven’t read yet. We have been doing some work on rhyming and so any silly rhymes that you can make with the children as you are walking and driving around will help with this.
Drop off and pick up times Year 1 children should arrive at school between 8. 35 and 8. 45 am. Unless absolutely necessary, we would prefer for children not to arrive before this time. Children should be collected from the main playground between 3. 05 and 3. 15 pm. Teachers will walk children out and dismiss to parents. Please remember that Friday pick up is at 1: 15 pm. We ask that you do not stay and chat on the playground, in line with our COVID health and safety policy. Also please also avoid using the play equipment on the Y 1 playground. Should you wish to contact your child’s teacher, please call the school or send an email to the office, to arrange a phone call as we are limiting the face to face meetings that we are having at the moment
