We went to school. I go to school. They will go to school. The tenses show the time of verb’s action.

Time can be split into three periods. 1. The Present Tense ( What are you doing ? ) 2. The Past Tense ( What you did ? ) 3. The Future Tense ( What you are going to do ? )

The tenses we use to show what time we are talking about are split into the Simple, Continuous and Perfect.

Verb Tense Continuum Past Present Future I will wait. I will be waiting. I will have waited. I will have been waiting. I wait. I am waiting. I have waited. I have been waiting. I waited. I was waiting. I had waited. I had been waiting.

When to use each verb tense Present Tense 1. Simple Present Tense S + V 1 (s+ es ) + O 1) I walk to school everyday. 2) The earth is round. -Use to describe customary or habitual actions and universal truth. 2. Present Progressive Tense S + is, am, are + V-ing +O 1) I am wearing my new raincoat. 2) He is doing M. A. in History. -Use to describe actions occuring now, in the present time. 3. Present Perfect Tense S + have/has + V 3 +O 1) I have read this book. 2) She has found a five rupee note under the table. -Use to describe for a completed action, just before speaking. 4. Present Perfect Progressive Tense S + have/has been + V-ing +O 1) I have been walking for two hours. 2) He has been teaching English for the last fifteen years. -Use to describe actions that have started in the past and have continued into the present.

Past Tense 1. Simple Past Tense S + V 2 + O 1) I ate breakfast yesterday. 2) She tore up the letter. -Use to describe actions that took place at a specific time in the past. 2. Past Progressive Tense S + was, were + V-ing +O 1) He was praising you. 2) Priya was looking at me. -Use to describe an action that was occuring at a specific point in time in the past. 3. Past Perfect Tense S + had + V 3 +O 1) I had phoned him at 10 in the mornung. 2) We had invited them. -Use to describe an action that was completed by a definite time. 4. Past Perfect Progressive Tense S + had been + V-ing +O 1) He had been living there for 10 years. 2) The snow had been falling continuously all day. -Use to emphasize the duration of an action that was completed before another action in the past.

Future Tense 1. Simple Future Tense S + shall/will + V 1 + O 1) We will win the match. 2) I will need some more money -Use to describe actions that are ecxpected to take place after the present. 2. Future Progressive Tense S + shall/will + be + V 1 -ing + O 1) We shall be studying. 2) He will be watching T. V. -Use to describe an actions that will be in progress in the future. 3. Future Perfect Tense S + shall/will + have + V 3 +O 1) I will have read this book by the end of this month. 2) He will have heard this news. -Use to describe actions that will be completed before another future action or before a specific future action. 4. Future Perfect Progressive Tense S + shall/will + have been + V-ing +O 1) He had been living there for 10 years. 2) The snow had been falling continuously all day. -Use to describe actions that will be start in the future and continue.
