How does it work? There are 5 strands to the project: #1 Talk English Courses #2 Talk English Friends #3 Talk English Activities #4 Talk English Here #5 Talk English Web www. britishcouncil. org/englishagenda
Courses Learners on a Talk English Course • For beginners • Take place in community settings • Taught by volunteers who are recruited and trained through the project www. britishcouncil. org/englishagenda
Why volunteers though? • Enable us to engage with a greater number of learners with limited funding • Lack of funding at Pre-entry- enables us to plug a gap • Stepping stone into more formal learning • Involves the wider community in English learning • Benefits to volunteers www. britishcouncil. org/englishagenda
Recruit volunteers through various channels- local networks, social media, the website Assess their suitability- level, attitude, motivation Train Offer an initial teacher training, some areas offer Level 3 Award in Education and Training Placement starts alongside training (in week 2 - 4) Support Materials from the website and classroom kit boxes Visits and supportive observations Chance to shadow an experienced teacher Ongoing CPD/volunteer networks www. britishcouncil. org/englishagenda
www. britishcouncil. org/englishagenda
• Double staffing volunteers- peer • Limitations of volunteersexpectations and quality support and more attn for learners • Volunteer drop out • Lots of willing, committed • Managing attendance of learners volunteers due to informality • Built community partnerships • Enabled us to fill a gap in provision at PE/E 1 • Good attendance and enthusiasm from learners • Volunteers achieving quals and/or experience moving on and up www. britishcouncil. org/englishagenda
