ANTT Clinical Guidelines Designed to reduce variability in aseptic technique ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
ANTT Guidelines are designed simply. They serve as visible practice standards in clinical areas. ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
They have proven to be a very powerful way to help standardize many practice variables that influence HAI e. g. • • Equipment choice Procedure sequence Best placement of hand cleaning Aseptic field management ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
They are also a very effective way of highlighting particularly problematic issues. For example, ‘Scrubbing the Hub’ in intravenous therapy. ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
They help healthcare organizations to: • Explicitly define the standard of care expected. • Monitor and quality assure the critical infection prevention skill of aseptic technique. ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
Designing ANTT Guidelines ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
First, ANTT Guidelines are sequenced according to a visual and mathematical formula that helps reduce risk of Key-Part and Key-Site contamination. This formula looks like this……………. . ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org

Then…… ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
To help reflect the fact that many clinical procedures occur in more than one clinical area, and to integrate with the ‘ 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene’ (WHO 2007)……. . ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
To help reflect the fact that many clinical procedures occur in more than one clinical area, and to integrate with the ‘ 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene’ (WHO 2007)……. . …procedures are split across three clinical areas or stages: Preparation Zone, Procedure Zone, Decontamination Zone. To help reflect the fact that many clinical procedures occur in more than one clinical area, and to integrate with the ‘ 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene’ (WHO 2007)……. . …procedures are split across theee clinical areas or stages: Preparation Zone, Procedure Zone, Decontamination Zone. On a hospital floor, this could reflect a clinical prep room, the patients bed space and a dirty room/sluice. Or, in an Intensive Care Unit, it could simply reflect a bedside work. Station, the bed space and decontamination space /bins. ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
The first ‘Steps’ that are sequenced are the ‘Critical-Steps’. These are the actions in the procedure that are most likely to infect the patient if they are contaminated. In all ANTT Clinical Guidelines, Critical-Steps are highlighted with a red numbered box. Take a look……. . ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org

Critical-Steps are then always ‘protected’ by ensuring a cleaning step or ‘benign’ steps that occurs immediately prior. Take a look…. ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org

Once the Critical-Steps are positioned, and protected, the rest of the guideline is sequenced. Like this…… ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org

As well as taking a methodical approach to procedure sequencing, a pragmatic approach is also required in ANTT Guideline design, as different procedures present different challenges. ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
When aseptic technique is standardized for the most common clinical procedures with ANTT Guidelines, it is much easier to monitor performance across large organizations. For simplicity and ease of use, ANTT -Audit Tools reflect the ANTT Guidelines. Like this… ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org

Minor changes are permitted locally in order to reflect local equipment. Minor sequencing changes can be made to. Remember, if the guidelines are changed very significantly and the principles of ANTT are not utilized. That’s really fine, but please do not call them ANTT Guidelines. The ANTT Organization is happy to review locally adapted (or newly designed) guidelines and to give permission for use of the ANTT logo. www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org ANTT® Copyright 2015 www. antt. org enquiries@antt. org
