WELCOME TO SOCIALS Yes, your tests are marked…. but I cannot hand them back yet because there is still one student who hasn’t written it. You can check you mark on CMM Today – first block - we will discuss whether or not WW 2 could have been prevented, we will look at Canada’s early contribution for WW 2 block two – we will look at the major battles of WW 2 and their significance to Canada.
WWII BEGINS September 1, 1939 – Germany invaded Poland WWII began § Used blitzkrieg tactics to quickly subdue Poland § Luftwaffe (German air force) airplanes attacked key targets § Wehrmacht attacked next using panzers (tanks) & motorized infantry (foot soldiers)
September 3, 1939 – Britain & France declared war on Germany & Germany’s allies § Canadian politicians held a special session of parliament to decide whether or not to enter the war § Government decided to enter the war but only if the Canadian government agreed conscription would not occur September 10, 1939 – Canada declared war on Germany & Germany’s allies
THE WAR IN WESTERN EUROPE The Phony War § Britain & France thought Hitler would attack western Europe after Poland so they stationed troops on the French. German border § But, nothing happened in the west b/tw Sept 1939 & April 1940 § This period was called the Phony War
