WWI Fallout • Many nations were left in economic depression and struggle. • Treaty of Versailles caused anger and resentment. • European democracies collapsed in the years after WWI and dictators were able to seize power.
Joseph Stalin & the Soviet Union • He comes to power in 1924 and creates a communist regime. • By 1937 it was the world’s 2 nd largest industrial power. • He creates a totalitarian Government – complete control of citizens / no rights / no power.
Benito mussolini & Italy • Dictator of Italy • He was injured in WWI and felt that Italy had been cheated in the peace agreements. • He declares himself dictator in 1925 and invades Ethiopia in 1936.

Adolf Hitler & Germany • A soldier in WWI and hated Germany’s terms in the Treaty of Versailles. • He came to power by promising to rebuild the economy and stabilize the country. • Nazism – German brand of fascism.
Anti-semitism • Hatred of Jews. • Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s problems and preached that Aryans (blonde hair, blue eyes) were the dominant “master race. ”
