Historical Background - The German economy suffered severe setbacks after the end of WW I, partly because of reparations payments required under the Treaty of Versailles. The government printed money to make payments and to repay the country’s war debt but the resulting hyperinflation led to inflated prices for consumer goods, economic chaos and food riots. - The government had actually failed to make their reparations payments in January 1923, therefore French troops occupied German industrial areas along the Ruhr and widespread Civil unrest followed. -The National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) or the Nazi party had talked of the removal of Weimar Republic, rejection of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, radical antisemitism, and anti-Bolshevism.

Reasons and means of promotion for the genocide -Racism especially anti semitism was a central feature of the regime. The Germanic peoples (the Nordic race) were considered by the Nazis to be the purest branch of the Aryan race, and were therefore viewed as the master race. Jews and other races, ethnicities and cultures such as homosexuals, blacks, political prisoners, were deemed undesirable and were therefore executed during the holocaust. The Nazis postulated the existence of a racial conflict between the Aryan master race and inferior races, particularly Jews, who were viewed as a mixed race that had infiltrated society and were responsible for the exploitation and repression of the Aryan race

Important dates/events that occurred during the genocide 1933 - The Nazi party takes power in Germany, they set up the first concentration camp at Dachau. 1934 - Jewish newspapers can no longer be sold in the streets. 1935 - Jews are deprived of their citizenship and other basic rights 1936 - Nazis boycott Jewish owned business, the Olympic games are held in Germany; signs barring Jews are removed until the games are over. 1939 - Jews must wear yellow stars sewed on their clothing. 1940 - Jews are put into ghettos, and concentration camps, Nazis began the first mass murder.

Peace settlements/UN action -Treaty of Versailles after WW 1, had shown German the main cause. - The resolution adopted by the General Assembly on November 1 st 2005, declared that the UN would make January 27 ‘International Day of the Commemoration’ in memory of the victims of the holocaust. They urged member states to initiate education programs to help instill the memory for future generations and help prevent future genocides.

There 24 of the top Nazi Party leaders were charged with crimes against humanity. -The first person that was captured and sent as a prisoner was Hermann Goering, Hitler chose him to be his successor in the 1930’s. -The Doctors Trial: 23 leading German physicians were charged that participated in crimes against humanity -Many perpetrators of the Nazi related crimes have never been found or punished.
