Context & Rationale (500 words) (5 Marks) Provide reasons as to why you want to make this piece. Take statements made in the introduction and expand on them. Imagine a friend asking you “why did you choose to make that piece? ” How would you explain your reasons to them? This is very personal section as the reasons come from you, they are your reasons Perhaps you really like the period, designer, wood used, carving or turning etc. J. Byrne 2017 2
Context & Rationale (500 words) (5 Marks) Don’t fall into the trap of describing what projects you have done in last few years but if there is a particular project that you wanted to expand on or is of relevance to your artefact then do include it. Do not put yourself down by saying things like I really wanted to do some curved work but I did not think that I would be able to so I went with a straight back instead. If time is the constraint than emphasise this more explain how long it takes to do a task by hand using powertool or machine combination of both do not say machine would be faster… not always. J. Byrne 2017 3
Research (2000 words) (20 Marks) Provide evidence on research carried out on this artefact. When did it first appear? Who designed it? How was it constructed and finished? This is one of the bigger sections of your work. This section needs to provide evidence of research shown. Be very careful here make sure your statements are factual. If you state something incorrectly you will lose all credibility. https: //youtu. be/9 df. Wzp 7 r. YR 4 You have to show your own learning here. Best joint, wood, glues & finishes. J. Byrne 2017 4

Expand on each item on the list. Remember to relate your own personnel views and experience. You have to demonstrate what you have learned in three years. Do not forget to state where original artefact is on display, museum stately home etc. J. Byrne 2017 5
General Feedback on Presentation Header page should include your name, image of finished artefact (Original if your artefact is not complete) and word count bottom right corner. Declaration of own work does not have to be bound within the project, it can be separate. Make sure that you are adhering to brief for layout correct font, line spacing, text justified etc. Wide margins to allow for binding print on one side only. Include page number bottom right of page. J. Byrne 2017 6
General Feedback on Presentation Write - edit - polish – print - edit and final polish. Reading aloud will help you to hear mistakes that your eyes gloss over. If you have to draw breath reading a sentence then trust me it is too long. Remember to keep it in an academic style no abbreviations such as don’t, wasn’t, didn’t etc. If you intend to use abbreviations for a word or phrase then you must use the full version first example Poly vinyl acetate (PVA) Same too for providing and explanation Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) a manmade board consisting of compressed shredded wood fibres. J. Byrne 2017 7
Proofing your work Use Spell Check watch similar words different meanings these do not always get highlighted in Word. Import you text into google docs and use there free soft ware or if possible down load their software. When you launch read & write, it appears as a ribbon across the screen You will then be asked to sign in. Have you used any of the joints or methods listed before? Are you experimenting with these joints, construction methods etc. ? J. Byrne 2017 10
Methodology Artefact Part 2 (1500 words) (15 Marks) Summarise this section and include it in your introduction. Describe how you manufactured your artefact, did you deviate from the methods given in your proposal if so why. Give a complete sequence of events to enable another to duplicate your artefact according to your instructions. This would probably best be achieved by keeping a reflective diary for each day of your work. You need to update this weekly Monday mornings (9. 00 to 11. 00) Reflective diary can be included in appendix. J. Byrne 2017 11
Methodology Finish Section (1500 words) (20 Marks) Summarise this section and include it in your introduction. Give a detailed description of how you prepared your artefact for the finish and the application of the finish to allow another to duplicate your work according to your instructions. This would probably best be achieved by keeping a reflective diary for each day of your work. Include any prep work you carried out in sampling different stains finishes etc. Reflective diary can be included in appendix. J. Byrne 2017 12
Estimated / Actual time chart (10 Marks) This table or chart should be inserted after Methodology Part 2 section. You may want to write a few words on the comparisons between both time chart submitted in semester 1 and actual time used. There are many different examples and some really good examples are provided by past students. I cannot stress enough how valuable this exercise is in allowing you to come prepared to class. It makes valuable use of your time. J. Byrne 2017 13
Other Sections Cutting list : Final finished cutting list should probably be inserted before Methodology Part 2. This list will probably have changed quite a bit from that submitted in semester 1. Don’t forget to include images, sketches and photos of actual work throughout the document. Upload to a cloud !!!!!! Remember to label and reference correctly. The Portfolio should be an inviting read that someone wants to take up and keep reading so the correct balance between images and text needs to be achieved. J. Byrne 2017 14
Finally Tip get a friend or family member to read your work and see if they have any questions for you. Sometimes we make presumptions on what information is already understood and ignore what needs to be included. Also peer sharing is very valuable swap work with your class mates and give and receive formative feedback.
