The story so far…paragraphs 1 and 2 On a dark, gloomy day Sami was feeling bored. Although it was the school holiday, he didn’t feel like he was on holiday at all. His friends were away, football was finished for the summer and the swimming pool was closed for refurbishment. Tired and fed up, miserable and despondent, he sent off to the park on his grey, worn out bike. As he cycled through the park on the long, grey winding path, the tall trees bowed like royal subjects in the wind a thin, grey drizzle came down around him. Sami decided to head for the playground hoping that he might find a friendly, familiar face. As the rain began to pour, Sami dropped his bike on the floor and sat on the roundabout. Idly, he pushed himself round. Gradually, the roundabout got faster and Sami realised that he was no longer pushing himself, another force was pushing him round. He spun faster and faster until everything around him was a blur of green and grey. Then as soon as it had started, it stopped. Completely. Sami was no longer in the park but in a mysterious jungle. The hot, humid air surrounded him and the damp, leaves strewn ground covered his feet. Sami, looked around in amazement. Just a moment ago, he had been stood in a dark, grey playground feeling miserable and bored and now he was in a jungle. Under his feet he felt prickly, damp leaves. The bright, dazzling sunlight his eyes as he looked around to see majestic, colourful flowers on the strangest plants he had ever seen. Where was this place? Why was he here? Tall, spindly trees towered above him and through those trees came a whisper like a child's voice, joyful and delighted.
The story so far…paragraphs 3 and 4 Looking and listening he thought about what he should do next. Should he explore? Would that be dangerous? Having felt so miserable and bored and now in this exciting, new world he decided he must explore! As he began to stroll into the jungle, he saw a large, dazzling light hanging from a branch. As he approached, he realised it was a diamond. It shone like a thousand stars. Moving carefully, he reached up to touch the diamond as he looked he saw there was a message scratched into the side. He read the message - you may explore the jungle as much as you like but you must not try and take anything back to your world! Suddenly, he heard a rustling sound and something large and mysterious moved towards him. “What are you? ” uttered Sami, nervously as a huge, spider appeared through the trees. “ You need to know that this is all mine. I am the ruler of this jungle. You must do exactly as you have been told or you may regret your disobedience forever!” commanded the huge, terrifying spider, slowly and precisely. “O – k, ” stuttered Sami. The spider disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. Wary but intrigued, excited and thrilled, Sami set off into the jungle. He looked in wonder at all that he could see. The monstrous trees, standing over him, the dew soaked plants that brushed his hands as he walked. On the ground and in the trees, he saw unusual creatures that were like animals from his world but not exactly the same. Red, striped monkeys, giant, pink insects and wild, spotty cats with two heads. He reached a clearing in the trees and sat on a broken log and took in the surroundings. Glinting in the sunlight, he spotted something shiny, buried in a pile of leaves and broken branches. Getting up to investigate, he kicked the leaves aside and revealed a pile of gold coins, like a pirate’s treasure. Without another thought, he scooped up the coins and began shovelling them into his pockets. He was going to be rich – he could buy anything he wanted! Suddenly, he stopped. His face fell. He remembered what the message on the diamond had said. He remembered what the spider had told him.
Paragraph 5 - the escape! Within no time at all, Sami heard the clicking sound of thousands of tiny legs approaching. He whipped round and came face to face with his worst nightmare. A mass of menacing, ebony spiders were advancing quickly, spinning their sticky, silver, silky webs among the leaves of the canopy. Sami ran. He jumped over the broken log, sprinted past the monstrous trees, the two-headed cats, the monkeys and the bizarre insects hiding in the bushes. Beneath his feet, the mud squelched and the golden coins jangled tauntingly in his pocket. How could he escape? Where was the place he came in? Panting, he leant against a mossy tree with stringy ivy winding its way up the gigantic trunk. As soon as he touched the tree, he found himself back on the roundabout, back in the playground, back to safety. • Dialogue or speech between characters, including the correct layout and punctuation • Prepositions • List sentences • 2 pair sentences • Expanded noun phrases using 2 or 4 adjectives • Similes • Comparison using comparative or superlative adjectives
Paragraph 6 – the main character returns back home bringing something back Confused and worried, cold and alone, Sami looked around him in bewilderment. What had just happened? His mind was cloudy as he tried to hold on to the memory of the colourful flowers, the striped monkeys and the cats with two heads. As he ambled home, his recollection began to fade and by the time he walked through his front door, all was lost. Absent-mindedly, he reached into his pocket and found coins that shone like a million stars – where had they come from? Curiously, the next day, as he bought his favourite chocolate bar, he still had the coins in his pocket. From that day on, Sami never ran out of money but was he the happiest person in the world? That’s another tale… • Dialogue or speech between characters, including the correct layout and punctuation • Prepositions • List sentences • 2 pair sentences • Expanded noun phrases using 2 or 4 adjectives • Similes • Comparison using comparative or superlative adjectives
