WRITING TERMS 1. Attention-Grabber (aka the HOOK) • • Statement that grabs reader’s attention 1 st sentence in intro paragraph Quote, statistic, definition, short anecdote What should you NEVER use as an AG statement? • • NO QUESTIONS…EVER!!! Ex) Text Messaging is convenient for the cellphone user. Concrete Detail (CD) • • Examples/evidence from literature or your personal experiences What do you use as CDs for literature? SAT essay? Ex) For example, if a person was in a meeting and could not use the phone, a text message could be sent instead.

5. Commentary (CM) • • Your opinion, interpretation, or evaluation of your CDs For every CD, how many CMs do you need? • • 2 CMs for every CD Ex) Cell phone owners want the convenience of being able to get a message across without spending minutes on the phone. It allows owners to quickly relay a message at any time. 6. TLQ’s (Transition, Lead-In, Quote) • • • Transition: for example, for instance, in addition… Lead-In: sets up the quote & provides info about who said it, when, etc. Quote: using what author has said as evidence • Not necessarily dialogue Ex) In addition, Ms. Jones argues in I Love Text Messaging, that “text messaging is emerging as the most common form of communication” (Jones 5).
