Narrative Writing What is Narrative Writing? Any kind of writing that tells a story. It’s usually categorized as FICTION, which is based on imagined events or stories that didn’t really happen. Examples: Fairy tales, myths, fables, legends, short stories, novels, etc. The other category is called NONFICTION, which is writing based on facts. Examples: Newspaper articles, essays, reports, autobiographies, and biographies
Characteristics of a Narrative Every narrative must contain a PLOT, a sequence of events with a beginning, middle, and an end. The most important component in a narrative is its CONFLICT, which is the struggle between major characters All narratives have CHARACTERS A protagonist (the hero)and an antagonist (usually the villain)
Characteristics (continued) Narratives need a SETTING, the time and location of the story Every narrative has a NARRATOR, who tells the story through his or her POINT OF VIEW 1 st person (as a character in the story) 3 rd person limited (non-character who only knows about 1 character) 3 rd person omniscient (non-character who knows everything about ALL the characters)
