Unit Purpose Create a play that can be read with fluency and expression.
Unit Timeline Day 1 - Model non-examples of fluency and expression while reading the mentor text Little Red Riding Hood Day 2 - Model examples of good fluency and expression with the mentor text Little Red Riding Hood, group discussion of differences Day 3 - Students practice reading Little Red Riding Hood on their own with good fluency and expression. Day 4 - Direct instruction of story elements (characters, plot, setting, BME) Day 5 - Brainstorm the characters and setting of the play Day 6 - Brainstorm the problem and solution that occurs in the play
Unit Timeline Day 7 - Draw a brainstormed beginning, middle and end of the play Day 8 - Have each student write a rough draft of their specific point in the play (B, M, or E) Day 9 - Group discussion of rough drafts and revision to make the B, M, and E blend together as a whole Day 10 - Finalization of the play script, repetitive practice of reading the play with fluency and expression Day 11 - Create a persuasive poster/ ad to invite an audience to come see the play and develop a commercial as a group to pitch your play, practice play Day 12 - Dress rehearsal of play Day 13 - Performance of the play Day 14 - Write a review of your play’s performance
Day 1 and 2 Modeling Mentor Text: Little Red Riding Hood
Day 1 and Day 2 modeling Reading with Fluency and Expression Non-examples ● ● ● Mumbling while reading Speaking with a monotone voice (voice stays at one volume. No changes in pitches) No facial expressions Reading words slowly, taking breaks/pauses in the middle of a sentence mispronouncing a word Examples ● ● ● Reading loud and clear enough for audience to hear Changing the tone of your voice to show excitement, questioning, anger, neutral, etc emotions Changing facial expressions to show different emotions (smile, frown, widen eyes, etc) Reading at a good pace, acknowledging commas and periods. Reading with no mistakes or errors

Day 7 - brainstorm beginning, middle, end of play B: Who are the characters? What is the setting? M: What happens to the characters? E: How are the characters different than they were in the beginning of the story because of the events that took place?
Day 8 - rough draft writing of students play Complete each section in the chart - one at a time. We will blend them together on Day 9. Writing strategies to keep in mind!
Day 9 - discussion and revision of play and blending the play together don’t forget details, details!
Day 10 - finalization of the play script and practice of play After you are done revising your play, it is time to practice! Here are two videos that will help you practice performing. The first video shows the teacher explaining how to practice reading over your script, and the second video shows a class performing. After watching the videos, try on your own with your own script!
Day 11 - Create poster and ad for play -I showed you good elements of an advertisement and how to make one. Now it’s your turn.
Day 12 - dress rehearsal of play Tips for reading your script: ● Speak loud and clearly, not too fast! ● Face the audience and speak to them ● Become your character and react in the story ● Convey the message of your play
Day 13 -performance of play Perform the play! ● If you make a mistake don’t worry, pretend it was right. ● Pay attention to how you’re reading. Make sure you are reading for fluency! ● Most important have fun!
Day 14 - Review of performance Questions to ask yourself while writing your review: ● ● ● Introduction: What do I know? Execution: What did they do? Specifics: What makes this production unique? Opinion: How did they do? Recommendation: Is this play worth seeing?
