Writing Exercise Writing Buddies Nancy Edwards UWISON June, 2014
Experience Sharing • Do any of you have a writing “buddy”? • How does this work for you? Has it made a difference? • What is your writing and/or review arrangement? • How has this evolved over time?
My Writing Buddies • Assistance with framing a manuscript, assessing potential for publication • Complementary strengths (co-mentorship, part of a mentorship structure) • Distinctions between writing buddy(ies) and co-authors • Examples: – Determining how to integrate case studies within a single article – Matching key messages to audience – Writing an edited book
Why a writing buddy • External perspective • Encourage you and provide constructive critique • Help you set realistic timelines and provide deadline “commitment” • Increase writing output and improve quality of writing • Get new ideas on managing writing time and saying “no”
Objectives • To confirm your writing buddy and to determine what short and longer-term commitments they are willing to make. • To share writing strategies that have worked for you. • To identify your learning objectives related to writing for the internship. • To discuss how you can work together to support each others’ writing activities. • To develop concrete plans for writing during the internship (to advance your project/manuscript).
Exercise • Share your writing-related learning objectives for the internship • What are the two most significant writing challenges you face? • What suggestions does your writing buddy have related to these challenges? • How are you going to work together during the internship?
