Differences between a formal letter and an informal letter • A formal letter has 2 addresses. An informal letter only has your address in the top right corner. • A formal letter would start “Dear Sir/Madam”. An informal letter would start “Hi”, “Hello”, or some other informal greeting. • An informal letter might start with a paragraph of “small-talk”, asking how the other person is, what they have been up to recently or if they enjoyed their holiday. • An informal letter has a more “chatty” and conversational tone, but there should be no slang or swearing. • A formal letter is signed off “Yours sincerely” or “Yours faithfully”. An informal letter can be signed less formally like “from”, “love from”, “see you soon”, or “best wishes”. • You can just sign off with your first name on an informal letter. You would need your full name/signature in a formal letter.
