What’s the difference between a “Topic Outline” and a “Paragraph Outline”? A “topic outline” is the name I made up for an outline that is like a Table of Contents A “paragraph outline” is the name for an outline that outlines your essay by paragraph **the difference between the two is that your topic outline only has the topics of the paragraph listed, whereas you paragraph outline is full of the information you will be including in your actual paragraph (like evidence, discussion, analysis, etc. )
Why doesn’t a typical formal outline work for outlining long essays? I. A. 1. 2. B. 1. 2. 3. II. A. a typical outline is not organized by topic, not paragraph ~since some topics have multiple paragraphs, it makes it tougher to figure out how to transition between paragraphs ~it makes it more difficult to keep track of the main ideas of your paragraphs & ensure that you are not repeating ideas
Why write a topic outline and a paragraph outline? the purpose of the topic outline is to give you a chance to look at all of your paragraph topics on one page *Topic Outlines helps in 2 ways: 1. It helps you make sure that you are not repeating paragraphs. 2. It helps when you work on transitioning between paragraphs or ‘chunks’ of information (more to come on this later) Tip: If you type your topic outline, then you can use it as a starting pointing for your paragraph outline later!
How to get started… 1. Take the information from your Topic Map **if you did your topic map correctly, all of this info should transition into your Topic Outline 2. Start by Writing Your i. Search investigation question at the top **your body paragraphs should all tie to or provide an answer to this question 3. Write full sentences (not single words/phrases) so you are clear about the main idea of the paragraph. **Keep in mind how many paragraphs you should be shooting for in order to meet the page requirement of the paper!!

The unreal images and expensive clothing promoted by advertisers has a great affect on the self image of young people. IV. Advertisers promote image and clothing that students fell pressured to have by their peers. V. The behavior promoted by advertisers, television and the internet is typically negative and illegal. VI. Often times, the behavior of young people is very different at home versus at school because students are influenced to ‘act out’ things that they see on media sites/sources. VII.
