WRITING A NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH Based on Photos
BRAINSTORMING In order to write a good quality narrative, you need to brainstorm first. You can do this by first choosing a topic and second creating a mind map for that topic. You can get a lot of the details you need (setting, time, place, people involved) by putting your ideas on paper and then by organizing them later.
WHAT TO THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU BRAINSTORM - Does the writing prompt make you think of something fun, happy, sad or depressing? - As soon as you read the prompt, what do you want to write about? - Do you not have that experience in your own life? Do you have to write about someone else’s life? - What will the main idea of your story be? - Who is going to be in the story? - Where are you going to be throughout most of the story? - What will the mood of the story be? - What noises do you hear around you in the story? - What things do you smell around you in the story? - What do you see around you in your story? - What things do you feel around you in the story? - What will happen in your story?
SAMPLE BRAINSTORM What other things would you add to this sample brainstorm?
BRAINSTORM Topic: Role models influence our lives. Your Task: Think of a time when you were influenced by a role model and create a brainstorm for that topic. Ensure you have all the necessary parts of a narrative (time, place, people involved, what happened and how you felt).
WRITE YOUR NARRATIVE PARAGRAPHS Use your brainstorm to write two narrative paragraphs. Your narrative must have a beginning, middle, and end. It also must have details and description and a moral. Try not to repeat similar vocabulary.
