Writing a hypothesis from a testable question
Form a hypothesis • A prediction or educated guess • Your testable prediction: What do you think will happen? • - If…(independent variable/cause) increases/decreases, then…(dependent variable/effect) will increase/decrease/stay the same because” statement
Variables – Independent variable (IV): • What I as the experimenter can change on purpose. • The cause – Dependent Variable (DV): • What doesn’t change on purpose, the change DEPENDS on the IV. • -What I am measuring/observing. • The effect
Steps to writing a good hypothesis: • 1: Look at your testable question-underline the cause/IV and circle the effect/DV • 2: Using knowledge that you have from observations you have made, make an educated guess/prediction of what you think will happen. • 3. Form a statement in the format – “ If…(independent variable/cause) increases/decrease, then…(dependent variable/effect) increases/decreases/stays the same, … because”
Examples Make sure to underline the IV(cause) and circle the DV(effect) in your testable question and in your hypothesis
1. How does shoe brand(New Balance or Nike) affect running speed? ”
If I wear New Balance shoes then I will run faster because they feel better on my feet.
2. How does the level of carbon dioxide affect atmosphere temperature?
If there is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere then the temperature will be warmer because it forms a layer like a blanket that traps heat in.
3. How does testing affect student achievement?
If I test students more frequently then they will achieve higher scores because they will be better prepared.
