Writing a Counter Claim – R 3 Section of Argumentative Essay The Counterclaim is when you state your opposition's argument upfront, and then proceed to break down the validity of that argument by pointing out flaws and providing evidence.
How to set up Counterclaim Paragraph 1. Topic sentence (introduce Counterclaim) 2. Give Rebuttal 3. Give the evidence (2 -3 sentences) 4. Explain how the evidence weakens the opponents claim (2 -3 sentences) 5. Closing Sentence Multiple sentences for evidence and multiple sentences in your own words as an explanation (you need 7 to 10 sentences).
Topic Sentence • This is where you introduce the Counterclaim. • Start with transition word or phrase…eg. Finally, lastly, etc. • Then start with…. v. My opponent will likely say…. v. Some may say…. v. My opponent would point out that…. v. My opposition believes that… • Example: Finally, my opponents, those opposed to a vegetarian lifestyle, will most likely point out that a diet without meat cannot possibly provide a completely nutritious and balanced diet. Rebuttal • Give a reason why your opponent’s claim is flawed. Make sure you are able to back up your reasons with evidence from the articles. Example: However, studies have shown that a vegetarian diet can and does deliver complete nutrition and can even provide health benefits. Evidence • Give evidence from the article that supports your rebuttal. (2 – 3 sentences) Example: The American Dietetic Association found that “a vegetarian diet can meet protein requirements, provide all the essential aminoacids (building blocks of protein), and improve health. ” the journals adds that according to the USDA and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, “meat is not an essential part of a healthy diet. ”
Explanation • Explain, in your own words, about the quote or paraphrase that is your evidence. Your explanation should be 2 -3 sentences Example: Not only does the ADA disprove my opposition’s claim, it strengthens my argument that you should switch to a vegetarian diet by stating that meat is inessential to one’s diet. Wrap-Up • Sum up everything you said, without sounding repetitive, and drive your point home.
