Writer’s Message and Conclusion 7/9/15
Learning Intentions • To understand the writer’s message, paying particular attention to imagery, word choice and symbolism • To understand why the conclusion is effective and important to the story
The Writer’s Message • We have discussed both Clare’s positivity, and her relationship with her father. Throughout the story, Donovan constantly conveys the importance of love, and positivity in the face of adversity. Loving relationships are shown through language, and the symbolism of hands. Positivity is shown through colourful imagery and word choice.
Hands • On the paper, each of you should draw around your hand. • Choose one quotation each – you are responsible for writing it in your ‘hand’. As a group, you should create an explanation for what the quotation shows.
Symbolism - Hands • Hands symbolise love, life and closeness. ‘…ma daddy’s haun lyin on the bedcover, bones stickn oot and veins showin through. ’ p 15 ‘The imprint of ma finger left sparkly wee trails a light. ’P 16 ‘She held her wedding ring between the thumb and first finger of her right haun, twistin it roon as she spoke and ah saw how loose it wis on her finger. ’ P 17 ‘Blue veins criss-crossed the back of her haun. Why were veins blue when blood is red? ’ p 18 ‘We sat for a long time, no speakin, jist haudin hauns. ’ p 18
Colour • Clare’s father is described in drained, colourless terms. He is covered in white asbestos as a ghost, and Clare describes his skin as looking yellow. Clare is the only colourful thing left in his life. (Her name means ‘light’).
Colour = Positivity • Look at the examples of imagery on the sheet you have been given.
Homework • Complete questions 5 -10 using the framework we have practised. • For Monday 14 th.
Conclusion • In your pairs, discuss how the conclusion links to the rest of the story. • Write down your ideas.
Conclusion • The conclusion reaffirms the positivity of the story, and the relationship with her father. Clare covers herself in glitter, symbolising her desire to be colourful and celebrate her father’s life. It links back to the moment when Clare taught her father about subtlety, and continues their fun, comfortable relationship, as she looks anything but subtle now.
