Coaches Expectations ● Get better everyday. Winning is NOT the priority. I want to see you working to get better every time you step on the mat. I want you to learn something new everyday. ● Mental and physical endurance. Wrestling is a contact sport, there is always a chance of getting hurt. I want our wrestlers to know I consider being “hurt” and being “injured” two different things. I will ALWAYS put our athletes safety first, but I will also push them and expect them to persevere. Being hurt (cuts, bruises, sore muscles, etc) is something they can wrestle through. Being injured (broken bones, sprains/ strains, concussions, etc) means sitting out to ensure proper healing and safety. If a wrestler is injured, I still want them to be part of the team. They should still feel included because injuries are out of our control and they can still learn and support their teammates. ● Push yourself and your teammates. I expect you to work harder than the guy next to you at practice, which will allow you to work harder than your opponent in a match. This will take discipline, focus, and endurance. At the end of the match both you and your opponent should be physically exhausted.

Coaches Expectations ● Respect and listen to your coaches. We are fortunate enough to have the head high school wrestling coach as our assistant this year, take advantage of that. As a coach, our priority is giving you the tools to succeed. Whether you are an experienced wrestler or this is your first season we want you to listen, try/learn all things we are teaching, and keep a positive attitude. ● Be a team. Although you compete during a match as an individual you are part of a team. I expect you to watch and support your teammates. You will be expected to stay seated on the bench/ matside until all your teammates have finished competing. ● Post-match conference. I expect you to come to the coaches corner after every match, win or lose. One of us coaches will take a minute to high-light areas of strength and areas to improve based on the match you wrestled. After you shake hands with both your opponent and opposite team coach, please report to our coaches corner for a brief post-match conference.

Team Expectations ● Be a responsible student. It is important to realize that extracurricular activities, such as sports, are a privilege. I expect all my wrestlers to understand that their first priority is academics. Many of the qualities needed to be successful in the classroom are the same qualities needed to be successful on the mat. ● Follow the code of conduct. Negative actions, attitudes, and behaviors during the school day can and will affect your opportunities to participate in wrestling. ● Represent PRMS with pride. As a member of the wrestling team you are a representative of not only your school but your family, community, coaches, and teammates. Think about everyone you represent before you react inappropriately. I expect respectful and responsible interactions with both teammates and opponents after both a victory or a loss.

Team Expectations ● Give it your best effort. I expect you to set goals

Team Expectations ● Give it your best effort. I expect you to set goals and look at every day as an opportunity to work towards those goals. Come to practice, give it your best effort, and at the end of the day you should be proud of the progress you are making. ● Be coachable. Having a positive attitude and learning to accept constructive criticism will benefit you in all aspects of your life. I expect you to be flexible and willing to try new things. I want you to ask questions and engage. ● Attendance. If you are at school, you are expected to be at practice. If you are injured and unable to practice, you are also expected to be at practice unless receiving care for injury or illness. If wrestlers are late to practice, excused or unexcused, they will have a note from the teacher or place you were at before practice.

If wrestlers are late to practice, excused or unexcused, they will have a note from the teacher or place you were at before practice. Wrestlers must attend a full day of school or they will not be allowed to wrestle in a meet. Wrestlers wanting to compete need to be at practice everyday, especially the day before a competition.

Attendance EXCUSED ABSENCES/ UNEXCUSED ABSENCES: Refer to the student handbook for clarification on these. However it is very important to be at practice in order to be prepared for competitions. Those who miss practice might fall behind. **Parents please notify a coach by note, email, or phone call (785)787 -9564 if your child cannot attend practice. If it is a last minute situation, let a coach know and bring a note when you return. If you cannot contact a coach, please notify the office. Competitions- Wrestlers are expected to stay and support their teammates until the end of the dual or tournament. Students may ride home with parents or legal guardians at the completion of competition only after signing out with a coach but please try to refrain from doing this. We would like to travel as a team to promote camaraderie. At home duals all wrestlers are required to help tear down and put up the mats after the competition is over. We will then have a brief team meeting before the wrestlers.

Parent Expectations ● ● Be Prompt. Please pick up your wrestler no later than 5: 00 PM. Our coaches have families as well and obligations they need to attend to at the conclusion of practice and competitions. Locker room etiquette. The locker room is reserved for wrestlers and coaches only- no exceptions. Please respect the privacy of the wrestlers. If you need to talk with a wrestler or coach, please send someone in to get the person you need and they will come out and talk to you. Meetings with coaches. If you need to meet with a coach please set up a designated time. Please do not approach a coach during practice or competition, that time is reserved for the coaches to focus on athletes. We encourage you to discuss any concerns you may have about your athlete or their interaction with the coaches. Be Their Biggest Supporter: Your involvement with the activities they choose to participate in means a lot to your student athlete. They know when you are in the stands. Please be a positive influence to your child. Positive attitudes are more beneficial to people than negative attitudes. We are working on this as a team, and would like to extend that out to parents as well. If you disagree with a coach, referee, or anyone else affiliated with wrestling, please keep those comments to yourself, but especially not vocalize those to your athlete. So that our coaches and parents can all pull in the same direction to improve our student athletes, PLEASE STAY POSITIVE.

Other Wrestling stuff Cutting Weight/Weight Classes. Cutting weight should NOT be an issue at the middle school level. If a student is within 1 -2 lbs of the weight class they want to wrestle we will suggest healthy meals and encourage a full intensity practice to make that weight class. We will NEVER condone skipping meals. Proper nutrition is a must to fuel the body and allow your athletes to compete at their highest capability. Hygiene. All contact sports present an opportunity for communicable skin diseases (i. e ringworm, impetigo, herpes, etc). To reduce the risk of contracting a skin disease athletes must wear clean practice clothes everyday, shower immediately after competition with an antibacterial soap, and encouraged to shower immediately after practice (at home). Also, keeping any open sores or scrapes covered will aid in keeping your skin healthy. Most of these diseases thrive in warm, damp areas (i. e. locker rooms, lockers, wrestling rooms) creating a wonderful breeding ground. Please check your skin daily and notify someone if you detect any abnormal spots.

Other Wrestling stuff Our efforts to keep athletes safe include: ● Mats are cleaned daily and proper equipment is readily available for cleaning and disposing of body fluids. Disinfecting of the mats is done with a commercial mixture designed to kill most viruses. ● Disinfectant spray is provided for use in lockers and on headgear. ● Kenshield, a foaming agent they rub on their body prior to practice and competition, is provided daily. This does not PREVENT diseases, however it provides an additional safeguard against those unwanted skin problems. ● Minor athletic care is provided (i. e taping, bandages, etc. ) and seeking additional care may be encouraged. As coaches, we are unable to diagnose or treat major injuries.
