WPMAG FRM / PRD R. Kembleton EUROfusion Prospective R&D Coordinator
Target high-level outcomes for FP 9 • Take immature technologies which may benefit fusion in the longer term, identify how they would integrate into a power plant, and develop them as options for DEMO (if ready in time) or for prospective customers of fusion • Identify long-term programmatic risks and start mitigation research: supply chains etc. • Scale-up and industrialisation of production and processes • Market needs from socio-economic studies • Encourage innovation in wider European fusion programme R. Kembleton | WPMAG-PRD | 2019 FRM, Feb 2020 | Page 2
Width of programme • Prospective R&D (PRD) programme potentially very wide…! (EUROfusion can only do so much…) • Target to provide a coherent programme aimed at Mission 7 within agreed budgets • Will have a reliance on national programmes, international collaborations, and watching briefs • Effective links particularly with existing international programmes on power plant studies using alternative approaches and that aim to provide facilities capable of testing and qualifying fusion technologies and materials • Structure and focus for assessing new ideas and encouraging bottom-up ideas with integration advice • Interaction with industry where appropriate (through FIIF? ) R. Kembleton | WPMAG-PRD | 2019 FRM, Feb 2020 | Page 3
FP 9 PRD technology – 1/2 • Development of He-cooled divertor including mock-ups using newly-developed materials, and HHF testing, safety assessment. Significant materials development also expected (driven by qualification experiments) • Continuation of development of continuous isotope separation options • Investigations into paths to Li-6 enrichment • Development of HTS options for magnets, including how to incorporate them into large TF coils: identification of materials requirements • Alternative Bo. P cycles, primarily SC CO 2 R. Kembleton | WPMAG-PRD | 2019 FRM, Feb 2020 | Page 4
FP 9 PRD technology – 2/2 • DCLL blanket concept development: identification of specific requirements within concept including permeation barriers • Decisions to be made on HCD options • Scale-up of advanced steel and ODS manufacture; optimisation of these steels for manufacturing methods • Use of IREMEV modelling to develop macroscale input tools for engineering and understanding of materials design/qualification rules • To be discussed: • How to make best use of power plant studies • Modelling of failure trees; optimisation of maintenance approaches R. Kembleton | WPMAG-PRD | 2019 FRM, Feb 2020 | Page 5
Power plant studies for alternative architectures • To answer the questions: • What are the global benefits of new technologies and architectures? • What are the integration challenges? Provides a framework to allow evaluation of new technologies in a power plant concept. Provides options to investigate consequences of e. g. negative triangularity, or alternative RM approaches R. PRD philosophy within FP 9 • For research to fall within PRD there should be a foreseeable path to applications of the work. There needs to be an identifiable technology development programme, with stated goals to be achieved to allow progress to be assessed, that may ultimately result in a useable system. • Ideas which are chiefly speculative should be dealt with in ENR or in the Research Unit’s domestic programme until the benefits are clear enough that technology-development funding from EUROfusion can usefully be applied. PRD can provide support for this research by investigating the potential impacts on power plant efficiency and design and identifying integration issues to be developed. R. FP 9 • 2021 -2025 work plan in preparation, HTS is in it • Additional re-arrangement: PRD will be package within PPPT • Cf. Ps for FP 9 probably around September • (IMS requires updating first…) R. Kembleton | WPMAG-PRD | 2019 FRM, Feb 2020 | Page 8
