PPMs The Pre-Production Models are deliverables of KM 3 Ne. T-PP • • PPM of the optical module PPM of the calibration system PPM of the readout/DAQ system PPM of a ‘small scale’ detection unit Final deliverable: description of the Production Models
PPM-objectives Questions to be answered with these PPMs: – Can we deploy? – Can we calibrate? – Can we measure signals? – Can we get the signals to shore? – Can we measure muon signals? – What do we learn for the PM? December 2010: Report delivered to EC describing the PPM models (KM 3 Ne. T_FL_REP_PPM_description)
PPM • 20 storeys, 6 m bars, for DU distance of 180 m • 2 storeys with ‘active’ DOMs • To be deployed and connected at…. ?

Adjusted PPM test programme for in-situ validation of technology 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. time – – – PPM-PMTunit: ‘mini-DOM’ in ANTARES Singles rate and coincidence measurements with 3” PMTs PPM-DOM: ‘full’ DOM in ANTARES Long term benchmark of the optical module Test of KM 3 Ne. T readout electronics DU deployment tests in Toulon area (5 storeys) Test of the design and integration of the detection unit (DU) Test of deployment method PPM-DU-Mechanics: deployment tests in Toulon area (20 storeys) Test of full unfurling and stability of tower PPM-DU-Backbone: Deployment of mechanical DU in Pylos area (20 storeys) – – – Test of reliability of backbone handling and DOM penetrators PPM-Operation Deployment and connection of ‘mini-tower’ at Capo Passero Test of KM 3 Ne. T fibre optics and data transmission Test of detector operation Using the facilities and services of the ANTARES, Capo Passero, Pylos sites i. e. An operational telescope, cables to shore, shore stations, Ro. Vs, deployment vessels, calibration devices
PPM-PMTunit: ‘mini-DOM’ in ANTARES • Objective: – Measurement of singles rates and coincidences with 3” PMTs – Delivery of info for simulation software and PMT specs for tendering • Implementation: – 5 PMTs only (limited by ANTARES readout) – Integration of mini-DOM in ANTARES instrumentation line
PPM-DOM: ‘full’ DOM in ANTARES • Objective – Long term benchmark of DOM – Test of KM 3 Ne. T readout electronics – Delivery of Production Models for DOM, calibration, readout/DAQ, transmission network • Implementation: – Install a DOM in Instrumentation Line of ANTARES – Adapt optical data transmission to ANTARES network
PPM-DU mechanics and deployment • Objective – Test of deployment and unfurling of full detection unit – Test of handling of backbone cable during deployment and unfurling – Delivery of Production Models of DU mechanics – Delivery of Production Model of backbone • Implementation – Several test deployments with smaller DU models – Test deployments with 20 storey DU model
PPM-DU backbone • Objective – Test of handling of backbone cable during deployment and unfurling – Test of penetrators – Delivery of Production Models of backbone • Implementation – Shallow water tests with backbone unfurling – Install backbone with autonomous fibre monitoring devices on 20 storey DU – If possible, use Delta Berenike for deployment/recovery
PPM-Operation: ‘mini-tower’ at Capo Passero site • Objectives – – – Test of KM 3 Ne. T fibre optics and data transmission network Test of detector operation Delivery of Production Modules of all components (update) • Implementation – Install 3 DOMs (two with ETEL, one with Hamamatsu PMTs) – Install ‘active’ backbone cables – Install ‘active’ storey cables – Connect to the existing seabed infrastructure and use the shore station facilities at the Capo Passero site
