What is worship? • A challenge to define. • Some view it as emotions and feelings, others as mere rituals, and still others see it as service in everything we do. • What is Biblical worship?

What is worship? • Προσκυνέω (proskuneo) “to kiss toward” “to make obeisance, do reverence toward” (Vine’s) “To express in attitude or gesture one’s complete dependence on or submission to a high authority figure” (BDAG)

What is worship? • Προσκυνέω (proskuneo) Understanding you are in the presence of God and rendering due reverence to Him • John 4: 23 -24 • Matthew 4: 9 -10 • Hebrews 1: 6, 11: 21 Revelation 4: 10, 5: 14, etc.

What is worship? • εὐσέβεια, (eusebia) Σέβω (sebo) To demonstrate (often with gestures) awesome respect toward God, piety, godliness • This is the ATTITUDE in worship • Acts 16: 14, 18: 7 Matthew 15: 9 • Godliness - 1 Timothy 2: 2, 2 Pet. 1: 3, 6 -7

What is worship? • Λατρεύω (latreuo) primarily, a word that means to serve. Often associated with worship. • This is DOING what He says to do because He is God • Philippians 3: 3 • Acts 24: 14 • Hebrews 10: 2 Matthew 4: 10 (serve)

True worship is: • Directed toward God • John 4: 24, Matthew 4: 9 -10 • Galatians 1: 10, it is about pleasing God Psalm 51: 17

True worship is: • Sacred • Worship is a holy act. It is a solemn occasion due the greatest of reverence • Hebrews 12: 28 • Old Testament worship demonstrates this cf. Exodus 40: 34 -38 Leviticus 10: 1 -3

True worship is: • In Spirit and in Truth • John 4: 24 • In Spirit – with an attitude of reverence and understanding • In Truth – according to His instructions

True worship is: • Deliberate • Worship is something we enter into (NOT everything we do) • Israel had feasts • Hebrews 10: 24 -25 • Acts 20: 7 • 1 Corinthians 11: 17 -26 1 Corinthians 16: 1 -2

Worship, a work of the church • Worship is first about God • 1 Corinthians 14: 25, one will fall down and worship God • Hebrews 13: 15, sacrifice of praise to God • Hebrews 10: 22, James 4: 8 Draw near to God

Worship, a work of the church • There acts we do together as the church • 1 Corinthians 11: 20 ff, the Lord’s supper (11: 24 -25, 10: 16) • 1 Corinthians 16: 1 -2, we give when we assemble • Colossians 3: 16, Ephesians 5: 19 with grace to the Lord

Worship, a work of the church • He has given us a pattern to follow in all that we do, including worship! • This pattern is about what He desires!

Worship, a work of the church • True worship DOES edify! • When we worship properly we will be edified • Hebrews 10: 24 -25 exhorting one another in assembly • 1 Corinthians 14: 12, 26 in our worship see that we are edifying one another (make it understandable) • Colossians 3: 16
