Personal Benefits Discover new worlds! • Get an insider’s view of another culture and a new view of your own. • Think about how many more people and places you could really get to know, newspapers and books you could read, movies and TV programs you could understand, websites you could visit with another language! Which language should I learn? • There’s no one answer: what is clear is that you should choose to study a second language for the RIGHT reason(s)! • Also, please note: One language is NOT easier than another– they all have their challenges and require that you learn: • • Listening Speaking Reading Writing Make your decision based on what is right for YOU!
Why take French? • It’s my heritage. • I have been to (or know about) a French-speaking country and am interested in the language and culture. • I know someone who speaks French. (French is spoken by over 300 million people on five continents) • I am interested in a career in: • • • Art Literature Cuisine Fashion Tourism International Business and/ or Sporting Events Did you know there are 15 French-speaking firms in Hampton Roads?
Why take German? • It’s my heritage. (43 million Americans claim German heritage) • I have been to (or know about) a German-speaking country and am interested in the culture and language. • I know someone who speaks German. • I am interested in a career in: • • • Engineering Technology (German is the 2 nd most used language on the Internet after English) Medicine (Second most requested language after Latin) Classical Music (Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss, Wagner…) International Business Did you know there are over 30 German-speaking firms in Hampton Roads?
Why take Latin? • I am interested in ancient history. • I am interested in ancient languages. • I want to understand the roots of English and other languages. • I am interested in mythology. • I want to improve my SAT and other entrance exam scores. • Studies conducted by the Educational Testing Service show that Latin students consistently outperform all other students on the verbal portion of the SAT. • I am interested in a career in: • • • Medicine Science Higher Education Did you know that over 60% of English words come from Latin?

(Spanish is the 2 nd most spoken language in the U. What about high school credits in middle school? • Few offered in middle school: Algebra, Geometry, and World Languages • Used towards high school graduation requirements, class rank, and grade promotion • WJCC Graduation Requirements – Standard Diploma – 1 year of World Language Advanced Diploma – 2 years of 2 different languages OR 3 years + of ONE World Language
