Why Study History? ■ To learn from past mistakes ■ To learn about ourselves ■ To learn about God and his plan for us But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. -2 Peter 3: 18 ■ Because past heroes can be role

■ Because the spread of democracy requires informed citizens ■ Because the past has an impact on us today ■ Because we interact with people around the world

Sources Primary ■ Actual records that have survived from the past ■ First person account Secondary ■ Information that others have gathered and interpreted, extended, analyzed, or evaluated

Analyzing Sources Time & Place Rule The closer in time and place a source and its creator were to an event in the past, the better the source will be. Bias Rule Every source (and person) is biased in some way

Bias ■ Types of bias – Confirmation Bias ■ “the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms our preexisting beliefs or opinions” (Shiao Chong) ■ “the more emotionally charged or deeply entrenched the belief, the more likely it is that confirmation bias will occur” (Shiao Chong) – Self-serving Bias ■ When things go right we give credit to ourselves. When they go wrong, we blame another. – Optimism/Pessimism ■ Emotions can make thinking irrational – In-Group Bias ■ Favoring people close to you

Bias: A Christian Perspective (Shiao Chong) ■ Fallen nature dislikes being wrong and prefers to find the wrong in others (finding the speck in our neighbor’s eye and not the logs in our own) ■ Restorative call is to seek to understand first, then be understood. ■ Restorative call is to remove our own “logs” before finding faults in others. ■ Restorative call is to love the truth more than winning arguments.

How Did the World Begin? ■ Naturalists: The Universe EXPLODED into being – View of God: There is no god ■ Pantheist: the universe has always been here – View of God: God is the forces and laws of the universe. Therefore, a pantheist tolerates ALL gods. ■ Creationist: God created the world – Christianity: A personal God created the universe and continues to care for it – Deism: God made the world and then left.

How old is the World? Young Earth Creationism Old Earth Creationism ■ The days of creation were 24 hour periods; therefore the earth is young. ■ The days of creation were longer periods of time; therefore the earth is old. ■ Approximately 6, 00010, 000 years old ■ Approximately 4. 5 billion years old God is CREATOR and SUSTAINER of Earth

Paleolithic Age: Old Stone Age ■ Pre-history: before written record ■ Characteristics – Lived in small family groups//nomadic lifestyle – Made tools of wood and stone – Used fire – Had a spoken language and religion
