Geographic Information Systems A geographic information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data.
Satellite Image An image taken by a satellite.
Map a diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc.
Globe A 3 -dimensional representation of the earth.
Databases A collection of information that is organized so that it can easily be accessed, managed, and updated.
Diagram symbolic representation of information according to some visualization technique.
Scale- a ratio of size in a map, model, drawing, or plan.
Absolute Location- An exact position on the earth’s surface.
Latitude- Imaginary Lines that measure degrees North and South of the Equator.
Longitude- Imaginary lines that measure degrees East and West of the Prime Meridian.
Orientation- the relative physical position or direction of something.
Map Distortion- Misrepresentations that occur when making a 3 dimensional Earth into a 2 -dimensional map.

Mercator Map. The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection.
1. Robinson Map- a world map which shows the entire world at once. It was specifically created in an attempt to find a good compromise to the problem of readily showing the whole globe as a flat image.
Polar Map-an azimuthal projection drawn to show Arctic and Antarctic areas.
