5. 5. 1 Define the term tertiary activity. (k) Tertiary Activity: Any economic activity that provides a service for people, or industry Examples Include: Doctors Teachers Taxi Drivers Hair Stylists
5. 5. 2 Identify the four categories of service activities. (k) The four Categories of service activities are: 1. Distributive Services 2. Financial Services 3. Personal Service 4. Government service
Four Categories of Tertiary Activity 1. Distributive activities: • distribution or movement of goods • distribution or movement of services • involves the transportation and sale of all products from manufacturer to consumer. • • Ex. truck driver, warehouse manager, sales person. ves the transportation and sale of all products from manufacturer to consumer. • Ex. truck driver, warehouse manager, sales person.
2. Financial Activity: • involves banks, insurance companies, financial advising companies, and trust companies.
3. Personal Service: • Services provided to individuals. • involves a wide range of services from legal services, to food services, to entertainment and counselling services.
4. Government service: • Public service industry is operated by Government and is not for profit. • Paid for by Tax payers!! • Ex. Education, health care, mail, water, sewer, roads. Hence the term “ public servant”.
5. 5. 3 Contrast private tertiary activity and public tertiary activity. (k) Public service industry is usually run by the government and is available to anyone in society. Ex. Health care, public transportation, education. Private service industry is run by private business and requires that a profit be made from the service. Ex. mechanics, lawyers, tourism.

(k) Quaternary activity: is the knowledge-based activity of the economy which typically includes services such as information generation and sharing, information technology, consultation, education, research and development, financial planning, and other knowledge-based services.
