World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims
World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims Themes for the Decade (Manuel Ramos - FEVR)
Currently, celebrations of World Day involve roughly 50 countries (in some, many events are take place nationwide, organized by one or by several organizations). In Africa this has grown from 3 countries in 2008 to 10 in 2011, and now that Africa's Road Safety Day is on the same day, I expect this number to increase. The European Parliament has also adopted a resolution in 2011 calling for member states to adopt the World Day. So far, it has been mostly NGOs who organized or coordinated events, hopefully the event of the Decade will lead to involvement of governments and others.
Rationale • Observance of the World Day of Remembrance offers a great opportunity for all who work at reducing road danger and road casualties to highlight their work and the reasons for that work. It is also an action that can help bring together colleagues or partners from around the world. • A common WDR theme can be a useful tool in the promotion of the goals of the Decade. • Celebrating the annual World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is one of the international activities proposed in the Global Plan for the Decade of Action; it seems fitting that themes during this decade could therefore be connected with the Plan and that the UNRSC partners help decide each year's theme.
Theme of the World Day The World Day theme in 2011, the year of the launch of the Decade, has become the main WDR motto for the duration of the Decade From Global Remembrance to Global Action across the Decade Let’s make 2011 -2020 a Decade to remember!
Theme of this year's World Day It has been suggested that, in addition, a different theme is chosen for each year of the Decade based on the actions proposed in the Global Plan, which are also supported in the NGO ‘Brussels Declaration’. From Global Remembrance to Global Action across the Decade Now is the time to learn from the past Let’s make 2011 -2020 a Decade to remember!
Message of this year's Theme This theme relates to the call in Pillar 1 of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for ongoing monitoring and evaluation, through relevant data systems, of road danger, road crashes, and their causes and impact. From Global Remembrance to Global Action across the Decade Let’s have roads that are safe for all (modes)(users) (elderly and children) (the most vulnerable) Let’s make 2011 -2020 a Decade to remember! This theme is to encourage all road safety stakeholders, but especially Lead agencies, to examine their countries’ road safety past and pursue a strategy to ensure a safer future, and to encourage NGOs to advocate and campaign for same.
Other possible topics for 21013 re Pillar 2 • Building danger-free roads • Safe roads for all who use them • Designing roads with all users in mind • Streets for people • Liveable streets - our children deserve no less • Build leveable streets to save our future • Roads for all mean pain for none (yours!) • Safe roads - safer future • Let remembrance pave the way to safer roads • Living memorias ensure liveable streets • 2013 is the 20 th anniversary of the World Day!!
