Nigeria Asthma and Chest Care Foundation As part of the activity marking this year’s World Asthma Day, the Asthma and Chest Care Foundation (ACCF) organized and awareness program featuring a step by step seminar to asthmatics on current trends (ways of controlling their asthma, a CME – inclusive workshop for doctors, nurses and other related healthcare providers at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC) Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. This gesture is in furtherance of the free medical services rendered by the organization. After a two part practical/demonstrated tutorials on the essentials in asthma conditions and management procedures, the host Prof. G. E. Erhablor engaged participants in a question and answer or interactive session aimed at demystifying certain concerns most asthmatics presented. Highlight of the occasion includes: graphical demonstration on effective use of peak flow meter, simplified explanation of basic concepts in asthma management, asthma booklet translation into Yoruba for the old or Non-English speaking participants and patients, free distribution of drugs and resource materials and entertainment/light refreshment for all participants. In addition, drugs were given to healthcare givers as well for their centers; whereas relatives of absent asthmatics received Ventolin inhaler and peak flow meter at no cost. The Asthma and Chest Care Foundation hopes to launch her office and diagnostic center aimed at extending care to asthmatics for sustained and improved health.

Dominican Republic NEUMONORTE Neumonorte, the Pulmonologists Society of the Northern Region of the Dominican Republic, held activities to celebrate World Asthma Day, this year under the motto “You can control your asthma. ” Activities for the week were kicked-off on May 3 by launching balloons into the air as an emblematic sign of breathing pollution-free air. The message to the community was that we can control asthma in order to improve the course of this important disease and patient outcomes. Members of Neumonorte conducted interviews with the press and participated in radio and television shows to raise awareness about the situation of asthma in our beloved Dominican Republic, but especially in the Cibao Region and the city of Santiago. During the week, a lecture by an international guest speaker was given about molecular therapy for asthma to different groups of specialists in internal medicine and students in medical training. Also, simultaneous conferences were held in different teaching hospitals of different cities of the Cibao Region, all with a focus on asthma. On Saturday May 7 th, members of the society provided services free of charge to the population with scarce resources in two hospitals: Cienfuegos and Ensanche Libertad. A total of 427 patients with asthma participated in the clinics where pulmonary function tests and drug therapy were provided. Egyptian Society of Allergy and Immunology Asthma Day was celebrated in Egypt for the 24 th year in succession and jointly with GINA WAD since 2001. The celebration this year was a joint celebration combining the Egyptian Society of allergy and Immunology, The Egyptian Society of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis, The Egyptian Scientific Society of Bronchology, GINA Mediterranean Initiative and the WHO EMRO for NCDs. The celebration included 3 events: 1 - Medical Congress over 2 days shared by over 200 physicians dealing with asthma from different specialties and Institutions. Over 30 speakers were involved. Guest speakers sharing the celebration included former GINA Chair Prof Jean Bousquet (France), GINA MED chair Prof Perluiggi Paggiaro (Italy). Prof Evangelia Mantzouranis GINA Assembly member from Greece, Dr Aziz Koleilat GINA Assembly member from Lebanon , Dr Asius Hammerich WHO EMRO acting Director on NCDs (from Germany) and Dr Slim Slama WHO officer from Tunisia. The sessions included real life cases of asthma and a story of a 10 year old girl who had severe asthma and responded well to anti asthma step 4/5 treatment. 2 - A press conference that was well attended by MEDIA and involved Heads of the 5 organizations involved and a famous celebrity (Egyptian Actor) who talked well on asthma experiences and anti-smoking programs. 3 - Two social events: Asthma walk and Run which is conducted annually in different sports clubs since 2010. A musical show (live stage) under the logo of WAD and invited were Physicians, Celebrities and some asthmatic patients. A professional team of young singers played a classic Egyptian Musical known as "the big night”.

Chilean Pediatric Pulmonology Society I am Dr. Herrera, coordinator of the Chilean Pediatric Pulmonology Society. On WAD 2016 we had a puppet show in an elementary school. The main character of the show was a boy with asthma, who showed what it was like to have the disease, and things he did to treat it. We also had music and singing! At the end of the show we handed out panflets with useful tips and information to the parents, especiallly regarding tell tale signs for asthma. It would be important for us to be present at the webpage, as it is the first time we do an activity like this, as a lot of effort was put behind it. Thank you very much!

Dominican Republic Neumonorte After a cordial greeting, like every year our company the Pulmonologists Northern Region, Neumonorte, send them notice of our logistics activities in the week of asthma, The first Tuesday in May, this 2014 corresponded May 5 , this day launch balloons into the air as emblematic meaning of breathing pollutionfree, this as a call to the world that we can control asthma and that we have time to improve the course of this important disease. We held conversations television, radio and the press in our country, our population raising awareness of the situation of asthma in our beloved Dominican Republic, but especially in the Cibao, Santiago, which gives our city. We had a lecture on the 7 th May, about molecular therapy for asthma, with different groups of specialists in internal medicine and medical training, with an international guest lecturer. On Friday, 8 simultaneous conferences were held in different teaching hospitals of different cities of the Cibao, all with the focus of asthma. Saturday 8 th we completed our service to help the population with scarce resources, with asthma in our carefully from Santiago, these hospitals are a Hundred Fires and Widening Freedom. It is a pleasure for our company Neumonorte important help this cause, in both hospitals we were attended 427 patients with Asthma, we perform 204 Oximeters, 96 espirometers to patients who came to our service.

Argentina Center of Allergy, Immunology and Respiratory Diseases On May 3 rd, 2016, we launched a national teleconference entitled “Guidance protocol for asthma diagnosis and management in adults” intended for primary care physicians and clinicians through the National Health Ministry. This protocol was developed by the National Program for Prevention and Control of Chronic Respiratory Diseases, with the participation of the Argentine Association of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (AAAe. IC) and the Argentine Association of Respiratory Medicine (AAMR) based on the GINA Pocket Guide. Our current challenge is to achieve its implementation at national level. In Santa Fe, we organized educational meetings on May 5 th and free spirometry tests in the UPCN health tent on may 6 th. Of course an extensive publicity campaign in written and audiovisual media was run to promote all this activities.

More than 40 individuals were screened and those who reported low PEFR were send for PFT assessment. The demographic data (name. age, gender, occupation, ht, wt) was taken for screening. All the subjects screened for asthma were tagged with gray ribbon as a token of acknowledgement.

Belgium European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients' Associations (EFA) BEFORE WORLD ASTHMA DAY. Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood. Today, 30 million European children and adults below the age of 45 years old have asthma and 15, 000 die each year from asthma attacks. This need not be the case. With adequate treatment and adherence, symptoms can be better managed and the number of asthma attacks and asthma deaths could be reduced. The European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients’ Associations (EFA) has launched a new report looking at adherence to asthma treatments among young people. Adolescent patients with asthma encounter difficulties in following their medication but the reasons are unclear; HEY YA! HEalth Literacy, Young Patients with Asthma and Adherence to treatment: EFA Report and European Recommendations is a new EFA publication based on the results of a 2015 survey that looked at the health status, asthma severity, attitude, treatment scheme, role of physicians and carers and health literacy of adolescents between 12 -17 from four European countries - France, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom. EFA Board Member Dan Murphy declared: “It is appalling that 15, 000 people die each year from asthma attacks in Europe. We are urging legislators, healthcare professionals, industry and carers, to take precise actions to support teenagers to enable them to know better their disease so they can manage their condition more effectively. We are confident that existing problems with asthma in adolescence can be minimised by developing health literacy materials and tailored tools to encourage a positive attitude and consequently increase adherence and reduce asthma attacks and needless deaths”. Thanks to the HEY YA survey, EFA has identified six reasons behind non-adherence to treatment. Although the majority of adolescents noted ‘forgetfulness’ as the most common cause impacting their adherence (24% of participants), the survey revealed other variables, also driven by attitude, might explain teenagers discipline to asthma medication. For example, the fact that many adolescents are rebelling against medical advice (22%), not taking their asthma seriously (10%) or ignoring the consequences of avoiding treatment (7%), made adolescents attitude the strongest driver of adherence in the survey. The severity of asthma also appeared to have an influence, as respondents noted they do not take their medicine when they feel better or exercise (14%). Positively, most patients consulted found their doctors’ advice to be useful, and their encouragement to deal with their asthma turned out to be another variable explaining adherence (11%). The HEY YA report sets out four policy recommendations with specific actions to improve the health of adolescent patients with asthma: Promoting multidisciplinary care coordination to better support adolescent patients and to identify those at risk. Developing Health Information Technologies (ICTs) specifically addressed to young patients to stimulate self-management, medication tracking and immediate healthcare feedback. Empowering young patients through shared decision-making and tailored health literacy materials to enable adolescents to take responsibility about their own health and asthma medication. Conducting additional research to picture the long-term consequences associated with poor adherence in adolescence and to curve down asthma. Asthma is one of the major non-communicable diseases worldwide and estimates foreseen its prevalence will continue to increase.
