Goal of the Project Background: limitations of library systems and cataloging standards in processing multilingual name authority information n To build a repository for storing XML metadata about personal authors, corporate bodies, and meeting names n To enhance access to bibliographic works n To help catalogers to identify correct name headings Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library

Name Access Control (NAC) n Authority Control n n Designate an authorized form of a name for use in bibliographic records Access Control Enrich information about a person to be used by different cataloging agencies for complying different standards n Flexible choice of authorized forms n n Access Control (single authorized form) = Authority Control Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library

The Person Model (2) Person – a distinct author n Name – an expression addressing the person n Name Form – a manifestation of the name n Hong Kong University of Science & Technology Library
