Injury must have occurred while in the course and scope of their job.

Go to nearest Emergency Room Ø Tell provider/first responders this is a WORK INJURY Ø Do NOT present employee health insurance information 2. Supervisor reports claim to Cor. Vel 1 -866 -245 -8588 Ø Option 2 to report the claim Ø Location: State of TN Campus: UTK, UTHSC (your campus) 3. Notify Office of Risk Management 865 -974 -5409
Timely Reporting Penalty as of July 1, 2019 • The Division of Claims and Risk Management (DCRM) wants all claims to be reported within (3) business days after the injury occurs. • Should an employee or employer not report a work injury that constitutes serious bodily injury or life-threatening injury within (3) business days, the injured worker’s department will be charged $500. 00
How to report a workplace injury Injured worker: § Notify your supervisor immediately! § Prior to seeking medical treatment, report claim to Cor. Vel 24/7: 1 -866 -245 -8588, option 1 Ø Ø Your Location: State of TN UTM, UTC (your campus) If the injured worker is unable to call, the supervisor must call using Option 2. Nurse recommends level of care needed! Call is transferred to agent for set up completion If no medical treatment from a doctor is recommended, the claim is considered “Incident Only” and closed. Ø Ø Ø If at a later time the injured worker decide he/she need medical care, Cor. Vel must be called (option 2) to get authorization to treat! If the nurse recommends medical treatment, the agent will provide location of nearest state authorized medical provider. CALL MUST TAKE PLACE WITHIN 3 BUSINESS DAYS!
DCRM Penalty • Do not get medical treatment before calling Cor. Vel unless the injury is a true emergency! • As of July 1, 2019: the injured worker’s department will be charged $500. 00 every time an injured worker seeks medical treatment prior to calling Cor. Vel 24/7!
After the doctor’s appointment • The injured worker must bring their supervisor a work status slip from the doctor • If the doctor gives a follow up referral, any additional appointments must be authorized by the Cor. Vel adjuster! • The work status slip must be given to your campus work comp contact, who will provide to me. • We must always follow the doctor’s directives: off work, light duty • Next step: complete reporting forms and provide them to your campus work comp contact, who will provide them to the system WC coordinator. Supervisor Responsibilities v Ensure everyone on your team is informed of the work comp reporting process! v Ensure that the injury is reported timely and properly v Ensure that EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) is notified if there is a safety concern v Ensure that all forms are completed and turned in v Work status directives must be followed v Ensure positive, frequent communication with the injured worker! v You must email your campus work comp contact the exact date the injured worker is off work AND the exact date of their return to work v Facilitate communication between injured worker and administration regarding any issues with their work injury
FAQ’s • Does the injured worker get paid for time away from work due to follow up appointments or physical therapy? v. No, there is no compensation under work comp for this. Follow up visits or physical therapy should be treated as any other nonwork related medical appointment.
FAQ’s • What if the injured worker gets a bill in the mail? v. Do not ignore it! Getting a bill means that the provider has not billed correctly v. Provide copy of bill to the claim adjuster or your campus work comp contact immediately
FAQ’s • My claim has been resolved for some time now, but I am starting to hurt again. What do I do? v. Contact your claim adjuster immediately and discuss. Depending on the circumstances, you may need further treatment, or you may need to report a new injury. v. Inform your supervisor and keep him/her in the loop on work status.
