1. Britain tried to end troubles with Native Americans by passing the Proclamation of 1763. 2. This alarmed the colonists because they thought that large numbers of British troops stationed in the colonies would interfere with their liberties. 3. George Greenville allowed customs officers to obtain writs of assistance in order to search colonial homes and ships for smuggled goods.
4. The purpose of the Sugar Act was to lower the tax on molasses and stop colonists from smuggling. 5. Smuggling courts differed from regular courts because in smuggling courts those accused had to prove they were innocent. 6. All printed materials , legal documents, playing cards and dice were all taxed under the Stamp Act.
7. Opposition to the Stamp Act focused on the fact that Parliament was taxing the colonists directly and without their consent. 8. To oppose the Stamp Act, Patrick Henry persuaded the burgesses of Virginia to take action against the Stamp Act. 9. To oppose the Stamp Act , Sam Adams helped to start an organization called the Sons of Liberty.
10. The Stamp Act Congress drafted a petition to the king stating that the colonies could only be taxed by their own colonial assemblies. 11. Merchants, artisans and farmers began to boycott British and European goods to protest the Stamp Act. 12. After the King repealed the Stamp Act, the colonists were happy but still did not trust the king.
13. The Declaratory Act allowed Great Britain to tax and make any decisions for the colonies that it wanted. 14. The Townshend Acts taxed imported goods such as glass, tea, paper and lead. 15. Women protested the Stamp Act by making homespun cloth and making other goods that were being boycotted by the colonists.
