I. The Era Of Good Feelings: Monroe’s presidency was called the “Era of Good Feelings” because political differences began to fade and the nation supported the president. II. Sectionalism Grows A. Regions disagreed on slavery, tariffs, and state’s rights. B. John C. Calhoun was against high tariffs because it protected Northern manufacturers but hurt Southern farmers. C. Daniel Webster was from the North. D. Henry Clay brought conflicting interest together through compromises. E. The Missouri Compromise allowed Missouri to enter as a slave state; Maine as a free state but banned slavery north of the 36 30’ parallel.
III. The American System: A. Clay’s American system included a protective tariff. B. In Mc. Colloch v. Maryland, the Supreme Court ruled that Maryland had no right to tax the national bank because it was a federal institution. IV. Foreign Affairs: A.
