Expressive Language Key points to remember… • Expressive language is the use of language and involves having thoughts and ideas, selecting the right words to use, putting those words into sentences and communicating with others. • Children develop expressive language at different rates so there is likely to be variation among children in your setting. • Children need means, reasons and opportunities to communicate. • Adults can support expressive language development by following the child’s lead and modelling language. • Vocabulary development is an important indicator of academic success. • Children use narrative skills every day to communicate and build relationships.
