WORDTALK ASSIGNMENT Ms. Liddane
Learning Objective ■ This lesson plan is aimed at upper middle school students. ■ Students will be able to use the Word. Talk application in Microsoft Word to aid them in reading the document for the lesson. ■ By the end of the lesson the students should be able to identify all aspects of the scientific process within paragraphs of text.
Description of Lesson ■ I will provide the students with a word document containing the report of a scientific experiment in paragraph form. ■ The students will then read/listen to the text with the assistance of Word. Talk. ■ While going through the text the students will use the track changes function in Word to annotate and identify the steps of the scientific method within the report. – They must identify: the purpose, hypothesis, materials, procedure, data/results, analysis of data, and the conclusion. ■ Students will be working individually in a computer lab, I will be there monitoring and be available to provide assistance if the students need further help with the assignment.
Assistive Technology ■ The assistive technology that the students will be using for this lesson is the Word. Talk application/plug-in that is available for free with Microsoft Word. ■ The students will use Word. Talk to aid them in reading the Word document I have provided for the lesson. ■ Below is the link to the toolbar guide, aid in the understanding of all the Word. Talk features. – http: //www. wordtalk. org. uk/toolbar-guide/
Purpose of the Assistive Technology ■ Using Word. Talk for this assignment will help the students in reading the report of a scientific experiment. Because scientific reports can have a lot of information, using this technology will allow the students to approach the report a paragraph or a few sentences at a time. ■ This will allow students to listen and look for the elements of the scientific method that they are looking to identify, while Word. Talk highlights the words as they are being read out loud. ■ Word. Talk also allows students to adjust the speed at which they are being read to, which will help with their comprehension of the material, especially for those students who are new to annotating scientific reports.
Assessment Plan ■ Once the students have finished annotating the report using the track changes feature, I will have them save their documents and send them to me so I can review them to see if the students were able to correctly identify the scientific method. ■ The following day in class we will annotate the report together, so I can help clarify for any students who might still have questions.
