Wordless Books Mapping Adventure

Overview Second Grade We will read several wordless books the week prior to our lesson series. At the beginning of this lesson series we will read Journey by Aaron Becker and talk about the adventure that the character goes on. Students will be given the expectations for the project on the first day and will have the remainder of the week to finish their book. We will start with brainstorming and creating a graphic organizer to make sure the images tell a cohesive story. Then students will create their own wordless book.

Key Concepts 1. Visual Art: Throughout time and across cultures people have looked at images for meaning. 2. Literacy: Throughout time and across cultures people have told stories through images. 4. Social Studies: Through time and across cultures people have been drawn to explore new and exciting places.

Essential Questions 1. 2. 3. 4. What adventures have been important in your life? How has adventure helped shape who you are today? Who has helped you on adventures? What is an adventure that you dream of?

Lesson Objectives 1. Visual Art: The students will create a wordless picture book that follows a logical sequence to conveys meaning to a reader. 2. Literacy: The students will organize a story in a way that allows the reader to understand the meaning without words. 3. Social Studies: Students will design a map of the world they create. 4. Social Studies: Students will design transportation throughout their adventure book.

Integration 1. Visual Art (Inspiration Artist: Aaron Becker): We will look at the work of Becker in his wordless books and how the pictures convey meaning that tells a story. 2. Literacy: We will read wordless stories and be able to identify plot elements from the illustrations. We will also talk about how to create a story that follows a logical sequence in order to be meaningful to the reader. 3. Social Studies: We will talk about different characteristics of the worlds we create, noting different land forms such as mountains and rivers. At the conclusion of our book there will be a map with a title and key that shows the world we created.

Anticipatory Set We will read the book Journey by Aaron Becker and tell the story together as a class orally.

Summative Assessment When students are sharing their books on day five, I will collect their graphic organizers and take notes on their book to make sure it follows a logical sequence.
