Word of God LOGOS & RHEMA Calvary Assembly of God Church Rev. Pas. Naveen John
WORD of God • There are two Greek terms for WORD of God • * LOGOS – λογος • * RHEMA - ῥήματι
WORD of God • Both logos and rhema are crucial to our Christian life, for God uses His logos Word to speak His rhema word to us. So the more we read the written Word, even storing it up in us, the more God can speak instant words to us. And God’s living, instant speaking always corresponds with His written Word, which keeps us on the right path. These instant words guide us and turn us to Him when we take heed to them.
WORD of God • As an example, let’s say you’re at work or school and you’re angry about something. The more you think about it, the more turmoil you experience, and the more dead you begin to feel. All of a sudden, Romans 8: 6 pops into your head: “The mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the spirit is life and peace. ”
LOGOS – λογος • Logos is the Greek term translated as • “word, ” • “speech, ” • “principle, ” or • “thought. ” • In Greek philosophy, it also referred to a universal, divine reason or the mind of God.
LOGOS – λογος • In the New Testament, the Gospel of John begins, “In the beginning was the Word (λογος), and the Word (λογος ) was with God (θεόν - Theon), and the Word (λογος) was God (θεόν). He was in the beginning with God (θεόν). All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men” (John 1: 1 -4).
LOGOS – λογος • Here it is clear that the “Word” or Logos is a reference to Jesus Christ. • WORD = LOGOS (λογος) = JESUS CHRIST
LOGOS – λογος • John states that Jesus, the Word or Logos, is eternal and is God. Further, all creation came about by and through Jesus, who is presented as the source of life. • Amazingly, this Logos came and lived among us: “And the Word (λογος) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1: 14).
LOGOS – λογος • In John’s use of the Logos concept, we find that -Jesus is eternal (“In the beginning was the Word”) -Jesus was with God prior to coming to earth (“the Word was with God”) -Jesus is God (“the Word was God. ”) -Jesus is Creator (“All things were made through him”) -Jesus is the Giver of Life (“In him was life”) -Jesus became human to live among us (“the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”)
LOGOS – λογος • Further, the opening of John’s Gospel carries a striking resemblance to Genesis 1: 1. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1: 1). “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him…” (John 1: 1).
LOGOS – λογος • Further, the John’s Gospel also talks about light Genesis 1: 1. 3 And God said, “Let there be light, ” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day, ” and the darkness he called “night. ” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. Genesis 1: 3 -4. “ 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it. John 1: 4 -5
LOGOS – λογος • Your word (λογος) , LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Psalm 119: 89 • "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word (λογος) of God. Luke 8: 11
LOGOS – λογος • For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4: 12
LOGOS – λογος • Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And light unto my path. Psalm 119: 105
LOGOS – λογος • 8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand forever. Isaiah 40: 8
