RECOMMENDATION CRITERIA The following criteria are to be used as a guide in determining the placement of students in grade 9.
ENGLISH Ø English 9 classes will be non-leveled with an “honors component” available for all students. Ø The mission of Stratford Public Schools is to foster academic and personal excellence through a curriculum designed to challenge all students. To fulfill that mission, all students in the nonleveled (heterogeneously grouped) English 1 course will be offered the option to earn honors distinction and honors credit on their high school transcript.
ENGLISH Honors Component Open to all students enrolled in English 1. Ø Assignments with higher expectations for the honors component. Ø Honors credit will be given with regular feedback during the course. Ø
MATHEMATICS, SOCIAL STUDIES, & SCIENCE Criteria for honors & college prep: Students will be placed in either honors or college prep courses based on eighth grade teacher recommendations
SCIENCE: EARTH & ENERGY SYSTEMS/HUMAN BIOLOGY Honors Criteria: Ø Must take Geometry or Algebra 2 in 9 th grade (or completed Geometry in 8 th grade) Ø Teacher recommendation
MATHEMATICS Integrated Math: Ø Placement determined by benchmark scores, teacher recommendation, student ability and grades. Common Core Math Support: Ø Class designed to offer support for students to work on their algebraic skills.
READING/WRITING Ø Students in all grades are placed into this course as a result of scores on district and standardized measures and performance in school. Ø Books A, B, C, D, E, & F – by teacher recommendation
SCHEDULING PROCESS Ø Middle school counselors conduct a classroom lesson to review the Program of Studies. Ø Middle school counselors hold individual conferences with students to review recommendations and elective course selections. Ø High school registration form is sent home for a parent/guardian signature. Ø Any questions or concerns please contact your child’s middle school counselor.
